PRESIDENT’S MEMO

February is Black History Month, and KERA and KDTN are proud to join in the celebration with a wide range of programs. Channel 13 will showcase the history and accomplishments of African-Americans in such offerings as Black Stars in Orbit, Zora Is My Name! on American Playhouse, and the continuation of Eyes on the Prize II. A few of the Black History Month specials on Channel 2 include A Singing Stream, The Negro Ensemble Company and All Day and All Night. You’ll find air dates and times for all these and many more elsewhere in this issue of Dial, and I invite you to tune in.

To learn more about television as an educational resource, turn to Channel 2 Sunday, February 11, at 7 p.m., and the following Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. That’s when KDTN is presenting Learn Something New, a special preview of the many outstanding educational and instructional programs available from Channel 2, Channel 13, and some of our area’s commercial stations. We are grateful to the Southwestern Bell Foundation for the generous grant that is making possible Channel 2’s presentation of Learn Something New.

Finally, I want to alert you to Channel 13’s upcoming productions about some very significant elections. The week of February 26, at 6:30 p.m. Channel 13 will present five local candidate forums highlighting races for the U.S. and Texas houses of representatives and the Texas senate. Then, March 1 and 2, KERA, along with WFAA-TV, The Dallas Morning News and Texas Monthly, is sponsoring The Texas Debates. These debates, which will air live at 7 p.m. on Channel 13 and KERA 90.1 and public and commercial television and radio stations around the state, will feature the Republican and Democratic candidates, respectively, for governor. I hope you’ll join us for these timely and important programs.
