The Children’s Zoo opens. Goats, sheep, baby ducks, Texas tortoises, Vietnamese potbellied pigs, etc. Open year round.

*Ndebele Dinner at Dallas Museum of Art. Cocktails, seated dinner & presentation by Margaret Courtney-Clarke, photographer of Ndebele art, which inspired the graphics at Wilds of Africa.



Friday April

6

Official ribbon cutting.

*Gala Safari Evening: an evening of African food, exciting entertainment, and moonlight monorail rides.



Monday April

9

Grand Opening Day for the public, 9AM-6PM.



Wednesday April

11

*Cocktail Reception and preview of “Making of a Continent,” a KXAS documentary about the building of the Wilds of Africa, hosted by Neiman Marcus and The Adolphus.



Thursday April

12

“Making of a Continent” airs on KXAS-TV, Channel 5, 7:30PM.



Saturday and Sunday April

14-15

Opening weekend with two afternoons of music special activities.



Thursday April

19

*Champagne Reception for visiting African Ambassadors featuring a premiere work by the Dallas Black Dance Theatre.

Saturday and Sunday April 21-22

African Heritage Weekend, 1-5PM both days. Storytellers, facepainting, pottery-making, and the nationally renowned KanKouran West African Dance Company from Washington, D.C., featuring dancers and drummers from Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States. On Sunday, the Dallas Black Dance Theatre will perform a new work specially commissioned by the Dallas Zoo for the opening of the Wilds of Africa.



Saturday April 21

The Beastly Ball at the Wilds of Africa. Sponsored by the Dallas ZooKeepers, partners and supporters 0f the Dallas Zoo. Tickets $35-50. Call 943-2771.

Monday April 23

*Cocktail buffet honoring Jane Goodall, author and expert on chimpanzees, and Nancy Hamon, primary benefactress of the Jake L. Hamon Gorilla Conservation Research Center.

Saturday and Sunday April

28-29

Pre-Cinco de Mayo Weekend, 1-5PM both days. Activities include: mariachi bands, traditional dancers, a presentation of the puppet opera “Monkey See, Monkey Do” by the Dallas Opera Guild, and decorating of the Zoo’s own “Ferdinand the Bull.”



*Grand Opening Patron Events. Patron tickets are $1500 per person, including all live events. Single tickets for the Gala Safari evening only are $250 per person. Single tickets (or the April 19 African Ambassadors’ Reception are $50 per person. For ticket information call the Dallas Zoological Society at 943-2771.
