In James Michener’s upcoming novel Earth, the first characters we meet are Ug and Ig, two carbon molecules floating in a swamp some 19 trillion years ago. The 17,232-page “geonovel” features cameo appearances by every human being who had ever lived up to April 17, 1989.
Okay. Kidding. But would you really be surprised? Michener’s Caribbean will have bookshelves and critics groaning this fall. And now there’s even a Michener board game, BESTSELL’R. The game promises that “those who 1ike to have their intellect tweaked” (something the actual novels rarely accomplish) will answer questions drawn from hernia-poppers like Texas, Space, and Chesapeake. First one to the top of the bestseller list, Michener’s habitual perch, wins. But there’s good news: you can play without having read a single one of Michener’s books. How can we ask more of any human activity?
