Thumbs down to Dallas builder trammell Crow for being the first major U.S. businessman to meet with China’s Communist dictator, Jiang Zemin, following the shocking Tiananmen Square massacre. The August meeting between Crow and Jiang marked the triumph of business over humanitarian concerns for Crow, who was in China to sign a letter of intent for a proposed merchandise mart in Shanghai. According to a Crow spokesman, the two men said almost nothing about the massacre or the Chinese government’s attempts to strangle democracy in its cradle. It’s easy to see why Jiang wanted to avoid the subject. What’s Crow’s excuse?
