LET’R RIP

|

Do the splutterings of outrage re: the rather undraped lady on page 23, October, mean that such ads are not the Opium of the masses? Does it help to think of it not as a perfume ad but a “fragrance ritual,” as the makers suggest? Our excuse: so high is the wall of integrity between editorial and advertising here at D that nobody on the edit side even knew the fille deshabille was in the magazine until she appeared-and no, that was not a photo of new Metropolis columnist Laura Miller

The Dallas Morning News, having wounded the Times Herald in the Great Comics Caper, now strikes a blow at D. Shortly after our September issue hit the stands, a News editor called to say that the Rock of Truth would no longer sell D any photographs, even if they were years old, even if we upped our price. We regret that the News photos we have brought you for fifteen years will henceforth be available only in the News, and we deplore this anti-competitive measure that limits your freedom of choice. . ,

Speaking of pictures, a select few wrote or called to protest the small picture of Michelangelo’s God on page 15, October. Sorry. Best likeness we could find, especially with News photos unavailable.

And picture this: Republican State Rep. Fred Hill of Richardson, explaining why he pulled his name off a resolution extending sympathy to Texans who had died from AIDS, a cold-hearted act that drew a Thumbs Down in August. Hill, who was joined by eight other GOP representatives from Dallas, says the resolution popped up on the House agenda unannounced, and he really didn’t have a chance to study is, and besides, for weeks he had been climbing the stairs to the House chambers past scores of chanting gay rights activists wearing black T-shirts, pink triangles, and death masks (not everyday garb in Richardson), and he was “determined he would not be intimidated” by the living gays. You showed ’em, Fred. . .

Hail to the Chief

Your Thumbs Down to Chief Mack Vines [September] for firing officer Patrick LeMaire was based on misinformation. Chief Vines correctly took disciplinary action regarding the shooting of an unarmed Mexican citizen before the Dallas Citizens Police Review Board discussed the case. The board is not structured to rule on the discipline of officers and must wait to review a case until after the chief has taken his action.

The function of the Citizens Police Review Board that you suggest is precisely the strengthened board we advocated during the May referendum. We support the kind of board D believes already exists. We are encouraged to know that D agrees with the need for such a board.

Negative Support

In Arkansas we help our teams, so I was most surprised to see your negative support toward America’s Team, your own Dallas Cowboys [“The Devil and Mr Jones,” September]. Surely the chamber of commerce does not support your attitude.

Your attempt to discredit Jerry Jones was childish, and of course you tried and failed to low-rate Arkansas. Where did Jed and Jethro come from? Not Arkansas. Our banks are sound. North Carolina didn’t have to bail Arkansas out!

1 guess you would prefer Bright and Lan-dry and 3-13!

LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS

Charles, right now we’ll settle for Tiny Tim and 3-13! For 5-11, you can throw in Zsa Zsa Gabor and a lead smelter plant to be named later.

Per-Fuming

I really object to the picture used on page 23 of your October issue. I realize that your magazine is not for children, but I believe that we adults can buy “another” type of magazine if we wish to see nudity!

Does D Magazine need this kind of help to sell what has been a good magazine?

Not His Type

The new artistic style you have chosen for the October 1989 issue is appealing, unless one has plans to actually read any of the articles. Perhaps in the next issue, you could block more stuff, put more items in boxes, and make the type even smaller and increasingly difficult to read.

Appalled

I have never been so disgusted and appalled to hear of your inference that my wife, Nancy, was having an affair after all the personal trauma she has endured [“Inside Dallas,” September]. This is a disgraceful and irresponsible attack on a proven crime victim based obviously on total ignorance of the facts in this case and total disregard for human feelings.
