Tandy and “Rhetoric”

I chuckled as 1 read “Racial Redistricting” |March|. I was particularly interested in the statement made by council
member Charles Tandy, who is a candidate again for District 1. It seems his position on redistricting has changed
loo late. Tandy says what is most convenient at the time he is speaking.

The statement printed about his last campaign issues is an example of the value he places on what he says, and more
importantly what he does, to benefit the people in District 1. I am considering placing that statement on a
billboard in District 1 for all to see. On May 6 we are going to stop the rhetoric he spoke about. This time we have
a choice, and Helen Giddings is speaking our language.

The Facts From The Chamber

An article in your March issue |”The Chamber’s No-Account Policy”] questions whether the Convention and Visitors
Bureau of the Greater Dallas Chamber has adequate accountability for its expenditures from the city’s hotel/motel
bed tax. 1 believe that bureau procedures do provide for proper accountability:

1. An annual activity plan is prepareddescribing the direction, programs, and activities for the year. The plan is
reviewed bythe bureau’s twenty-nine-member Board ofDirectors comprising representatives fromeach area Chamber of
Commerce, the cityof Dallas, the Hotel-Motel Association, thelodging and transportation industries, andfrom local
attractions.

2. A detailed annual financial budget isprepared. This budget is reviewed by theChamber Finance Committee and
boardand is submitted to the City Council forapproval.

3. Monthly reports are sent to the citydetailing program results and activities andproviding actual expenditures by
line itemcompared to budget for the month and year-to-date.

4. An annual report is prepared and sentto the city on program and financial results. The financial results for the
year tie directly to the financial statements examined byindependent auditors.

In addition, the internal financial controls and procedures of the Convention and Visitors Bureau are regularly
reviewed, challenged, and updated to ensure that expenditures are documented and approved.

So Take I-3D East…Or West…Or…

I recently relocated to Dallas from a larger city “out west” and am awaiting final preparations to depart, as one
would say. for parts unknown, or. . .anywhere but here. Just as an observation, have any of the restaurant critics
who write for you ever completed any level of education beyond the sixth grade, or traveled to other environs and
expanded their horizons and/or knowledge? In a recent issue I found a repetitive word used in three paragraphs of a
five-paragraph review. Do your critics have the use of any form of dictionaries, thesaurus? I have also read
misspelled words and the wrong tenses have been used in restaurant columns. I understand this state has its problems
with education, but really someone, somewhere must have pointed out these peccadilloes. Arc Dallasites totally
lacking sagacity? Intelligence? It isn’t just your magazine on this topic. I have yet to meet one person in this
town who can give clear, concise directions to any locale. Before you ever come close to being “World Class” someone
is going to want to know “where” you are, Dallas!

With regard to the comments concerning my organizations in Tennessee |”The Cancer Warrior,” February], there were
some substantial errors. First, The Biological Therapy Institute is a nonprofit, medical research institute. We
carry out clinical research testing new forms of cancer biother-apy in patients. These tests are all done under Food
and Drug Administration registered protocols and with approval by each hospital’s institutional review board.

Second. The Biological Therapy Institute is an organization separate from Biothera-peutics. Biotherapeutics, which I
founded, is a for-profit laboratory research firm. And last, you say that patients are charged for our treatment but
receive free care under National Cancer Institute sponsorship. The costs of research are borne by the patient in
both systems.

Your article focuses on some of the important issues in cancer research and treatment. How aggressive should the
physician be in bringing new treatments to his patients? Who should pay the cost of clinical research? How does the
patient gain access to the latest in cancer treatment and determine which physician is best for his/her care? These
are important questions, and 1 congratulate you on bringing some of the issues forward through D.

A Man Of Ideas

Thank you for “The Cutting Edge” [March]. It’s a pleasure to see articles on these individuals, but especially Dr.
Kenneth Salyer of Humana Hospital-Medical City. He is a man of ideas whose visions can be a guiding force for Dallas
in the 21st century. Most importantly he teaches and trains others to carry on those ideas.

With the work of Salyer and others in your article, Dallas will, indeed, continue to be a great city.

In your “Best and Worst” issue [January], you printed an unfair and puzzling article about Dino’s Shoe Repair. You
wrote that you “sent a scout [to Dino’s|” with a purse and “Dino’s and said purse owner are scheduled to meet
again-in small claims court.” Why would D Magazine send a “scout” to Dino’s and then sue Dino’s in court? Why
would D Magazine print a negative story implying that Dino’s was at fault when a court case was pending to
decide that very issue?
As you noted in the January issue, “Dino said that he was not at fault, that she [D Magazine’s scout was
warned that he might not be able to clean suede…and that there could be no refund.” The court agreed with Dino.
Furthermore, there was never a sign in the window implying that “we clean suede.”
We appreciate D Magazine’s willingness to set the record straight.
