CRIME THE CHECK’S IN THE MAIL

|

Sources say that the District Attorney’s office is onto a major scandal at Parkland Hospital-the embezzlement of up to $500,000 by a worker in the hospital’s business office.

The woman’s job was to mail checks to insurance companies that had overpaid an account. Instead, she mailed numerous checks to a post office box, picked them up herself, and cashed them at a nearby liquor store where she had apparently made a deal.

During a regular internal audit this winter, a Parkland auditor noticed the money had not gone to the insurance companies. The hospital took its evidence to the DA, and the employee who hatched the scheme was terminated in April. As many as ten others are being investigated, and the DA will not release names until formal charges are filed. Meanwhile, the woman wants her old job back. With those fringe benefits, who can blame her?
