President’s Memo

|

At 7 p.m. Thursday, September 1, KDTN Channel 2 takes to the air as a full-time educational and public affairs television station, culminating years of hard work, fund-raising, planning, and yearning by North Texas Public Broadcasting and the people of Denton, Dallas, Fort Worth, and all of North Texas.

With education and the economy foremost in the minds of the state’s citizens, educators, and elected representatives, the timing couldn’t be better for the birth of a low-cost, effective teaching tool like Channel 2. A feature on Channel 2 appears on page 152 of this month’s Dial, but I want to acknowledge here a few special friends of Channel 2.

Surely all those who contributed to the capital fund-raising campaign for the station were valuable in bringing Channel 2 to reality. But we would not be where we are today without the tireless efforts of Roy Appleton, Pete Baldwin, Fred Patterson, Newton Rayzor, and Irwin Grossman, among others, and the generosity of the Meadows Foundation, Tandy Corporation, Sun Exploration and Production Company, the Aileen S. Andrew Foundation, the Anne Burnett and Charles D. Tandy Foundation, the Amon G. Carter Foundation, and the Eugene McDermott Foundation.

Let us not forget, however, that Channel 13 and 90.1 still are dedicated to TV worth watching and one-of-a-kind radio. A special treat on Channel 13 this month is the premiere of EastEnders, Britain’s most popular soap opera. A two-hour EastEnders presentation airing Saturday, September 10, at 8 p.m., will introduce the characters, and the series itself will run weeknights at 11:30 beginning two nights later.

Of special interest on 90.1 is Callas: In Her Own Words, a series of four one-hour programs premiering Sunday, September 18, at 11 a.m. The series about one of this century’s most acclaimed divas was written by John Ardoin, The Dallas Morning News music critic.

Thanks for supporting NTPB in so many ways, and join us September 1 as we celebrate the sign-on of Channel 2.

Best wishe,

Richard J. Meyer

The two girls are swept away by the romance and passion of the times and give more than their hearts to the soldiers. Dreams of glory quickly fade for Walter and Billy as they watch thousands of their countrymen die in the tragic battle of Gallipoli, while the women face a more private, but no less devastating tragedy at home.
