HIGHLAND PARK VILLAGE CATCH THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT AT HIGHLAND PARK VILLAGE.

By D Magazine |

The grand Christmas Tree is up (join us for the lighting ceremony November 25 at 6 pm) and caroling is in the air. The Village is all aglow with holiday cheer. Sidewalk trees are laced with twinkling lights, lamp posts are beribboned and trimmed with shiny glass balls, and store windows arc all dressed up for the holidays.

Indulge in all the things that make Christmas special. Like the horse-drawn surrey rides that leave from the Village each evening from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Snuggle beneath blankets as horses trimmed with jingle bells take you for a starlit ride through old Highland Park.

Hermes has been in Dallas only three years, but the French firm has been setting the standards for silk and leather goods for the last 150 years.

Tops on their gift list is the Kelly handbag, which now comes in colors such as emerald green, lemon yellow, and jetset red. New this season is the modified Kelly, a mini version with a longer shoulder strap.

For that man who really does have everything, consider a bulletproof briefcase. It boasts a dark charcoal exterior with a tan leather handle, brass locks, and a brass plate for initials. For those who live less dangerously, there are regular briefcases and attachés in beautiful leathers.

The “Captaine Nemo” is a diver’s watch created in honor of Jules Verne’s character and is waterproof to 100 meters. It comes in steel, gold, a combination of the two, or in carbon fiber in both men’s and women’s sizes.

An Hermes scarf is many a woman’s prize possession. Choose from hundreds of colors and patterns, all made of handrolled silk.

And, a tie is always correct. With 900 motifs in their collection, each in twelve to twenty-five color arrays, Hermes is sure to have a tie to suit any taste.

The Village Bakery is just the place to find homespun Christmas goodies just like Mom used to make. “I’ve gone back to making the things I had as a child,” says owner Sue Paschall Semos. Her fond remembrances have yielded colorful cutout Christmas cookies in the shapes of reindeer and wreaths as well as giant Santa Claus cookies and sheet cakes. Specialty cakes such as yule logs and ethnic Christmas cakes can also be ordered.

The bakery offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and has full-service catering available. Hours are: 7 am to 8 pm, Monday through Saturday. Sunday brunch, 11 am to 3 pm.

California Sweatsuit Enterprise is the perfect cure for stress. Not only does the boutique have the most comfortable, fun clothes that you absolutely want to be seen in, but the tri-level white store has a water bar as well. Bottled waters from around the world are available for your enjoyment.

With a Malibu influence, most items arc relaxed, pull-on pants, skirts and shorts with easy tops and jackets made of natural fibers. There are sweatsuits in twenty-five luscious colors with coordinating socks and all can be mixed or matched at will.

Valentine Furs is a full-service fur salon that caters to every taste. “We stock almost every kind of fur,” says Stephen Birnbaum who, along with his father, runs the family business.

Christmas is their busy season and Birnbaum says “we’re open by appointment twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.” Many men love to surprise their wives with a fur on Christmas day. The important thing to remember, according to Birnbaum, is not to feel obligated to keep it. “It may be exchanged for another or returned, according to the recipient’s wish,” he says.

Dressy or sporty, mink is still his top seller and the best choice for Dallas’ climate and lifestyle. “Mink is very durable, more so than sable or chinchilla,” he adds.

Valentine’s services everything they sell as well as custom designing furs to fit the client’s personal tastes.

Noble’s suggestions for a merry Christmas this year include watches by Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Bertolucci and Briguet, a regal pearl collar, or a large diamond or emerald.

The Village location is Fishburn’s twenty-first branch and one of its most popular. Aside from the convenience of being located near their favorite shops, clients come to Fishburn’s because of their expertise and special handling of expensive garments.

Those who wear Benetton make a strong fashion statement not only in the way they put the pieces together but in the colors they choose. Color, a trademark of Benetton, can be inno-vatively mixed or matched in a variety of styles.

James K. Wilson, Ltd., celebrates their first anniversary as the limited edition, but they have been in the Village as James. K. Wilson since 1956, making them the oldest men’s clothier there. The store’s select merchandise features fashion-forward designs for both men and women.

New this holiday season will be the Joseph Abboud line for men. The complete line of upper-end sportswear, likened to the Ralph Lauren look, includes Fair Isle sweaters, houndstooth flannel slacks, cotton shirts and beautiful handknit shirts.

Also in for Christmas is the Coogi line, handknit wool sweaters from Australia which are woven in rich colors with abstract patterns.
