DOES THE SWINGIN’ SINGLE SURVIVE? CHECK IT OUT
By D Magazine |

Memphis. Bands jam loud and hard on the tiny stage while the crowd cuts a path through this crammed singles headquarters. A fairly hip-looking pack (about two-to-one male, mostly twenty-five and older) was on hand the Saturday night we hit the Addison spot. Although many seemed mesmerized by the heavy metal/jazz group, few lonely faces were seen. This group was serious about partying.

Randy’s. One of our female scouts said she felt like Peter Cottontail walking into a den of hungry wolves on her first outing at Randy’s, a private club located in the shadows of Prestonwood Mall. The crowd is oh-so-chic, dressed to kill, and well-monied (or at least they all act like they’re sitting on a gold mine). Wear something naughty (the club enforces a dress code but that doesn’t seem to cover women’s breasts, which we saw plenty of) and you’ll go far.

Sam’s Cafe. Five wooden tables, a short row of bar stools, terra cotta tile, and a touch of greenery is all there is to Sam’s. On the surface, anyway. But this is the place to see the well-heeled, on-a-roll professional types who’ve selected this spot to cap off a busy day filled with boardroom business deals. The best night to see Sam’s in full swing is Thursday.

Max’s 403. We had some initial reservations about Max’s. Too many things seemed to work against the joint: it’s in the same location where such long-forgotten drinkeries as Brio and Packard’s once stood, and then there was the obvious matter of those colored lava lamps bubbling away in the bar’s corner. But Max’s 403 is thriving and the people seem to really enjoy being here. Max’s seems comfortably between its predecessors: not as jeansy-casual as Packard’s, not as coolly formal as Brio. A nice blend of recorded music is probably the club’s best asset, played at a reasonable level so that you can actually strike up a conversation with the drinker next door and know well before quitting time if you’ve snagged a good one-or whether you need to leave by the emergency exit.

R ’N’ R USA. This is the poor man’s Hard Rock Cafe, with records and guitars hanging on the walls. R ’N’ R (and we were told the initials stand for whatever you want them to mean) draws a young crowd looking to prance and pounce to the music. The varied playlist includes the likes of Whitney Houston, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Alabama, and the Beatles.
