NEW BOATS An ’88 Preview

Boat enthusiasts rejoice. The new year’s new models are out with more options than ever before. Here we look at some of our favorites, but for an even closer view don’t miss the Dallas Boat Show, January 29 through February 7.

■Wellcraft – 222 Elite XL

Wellcraft has added a long list of luxuries to the 222 Elite model, resulting in an incredibly enjoyable, and versatile sportboat. Custom-molded plex sliding doors enter into a spacious cabin with roomy sleeping berths and plenty of seating. Also included is a hide-away head, a stereo, cooler and anchor locker. ■Bayliner – 1800 Cobra

This sleek performance sport runabout has earned Powerboat Magazine’s Compact Boat of the Year award among other accolades. Matched with a low-profile painted Escort trailer and the 125 hp Force outboard with standard tilt and trim, this bowrider combines speed with precise handling, not to mention snazzy good looks. Features include new, high-tech vanishing point instrumentation and metalflake gelcoat plus standard fare like removable ski tow post, a convertible top, mooring cover, digital AM/FM cassette stereo and swim platform. ■Wellcraft – 170 Classic

Wellcraft’s newest sportboat, this roomy 17-footer is not only fun, but affordable. Standard features include a built-in ice chest in the bow, hidden ski and top storage areas, a teak dive platform and an AM/FM stereo. And you can choose between an I/O or an outboard. ■Sea Ray – Laguna 23

A center console fishing boat for the serious fisherman. Features include a portable head, an extra large 120-gallon fuel tank, a 20-gallon fresh water system and plenty of dry storage space. The Laguna is also equipped with hydraulic steering with power assist. And its wider beam makes it one of the driest and most stable running boats of its size. Length: 24’; Weight: 3,800 lbs.

■Sea Ray – Sorrento 25 Sundancer

A perfect weekend boat, this new Sorrento is fully equipped with galley, head, shower and spacious seating that converts to a private sleeping area. And it also sports a roomy, private mid cabin. The advanced styling and versatility of the Sundancer definitely makes it one of the new trends in sport cruisers. Length: 25’8″; Weight: 5,518 lbs.

■Sea Ray – Seville 16

This 16-footer has a total outboard system and is known for its performance. In fact, the Seville is designed to plane out faster and more efficiently with less horse power. A great sport boat, and extremely easy to trailer. Length: 16’9″; Weight: 1,495 lbs.; Max. HP: 100

■ Bayliner – 2650 Ciera Sunbridge

With sleeping for six, a complete galley, stretch-out lounge seating and converti-ble/bimini top, this midsize design is the ultimate tri-cabin family cruiser. A few of the standard items are a digital depth sounder, radar wing with recessed lighting, CB radio and a digital AM/FM cassette stereo. Length: 261″, Weight with 260 OMC engine: 5,100 lbs.

■Bayliner- 1950 Capri Bowrider

One of the country’s best-selling runabouts this sporty Capri is the epitome of state-of-the-art styling and high performance engineering. With a new deck and transom for 1988, the 1950 now has more interior space than most 22-footers. A few of the standards include an AM/FM cassette stereo system, swim platform with folding ladder, built-in ice chest, ski locker, and contoured fold-down sleeper seats. The Capri also comes with its own Escort trailer. Length: 187″; Weight with 130 OMC engine: 1,900 lbs.
