ARNOLD MECH, MD HAS CONTINUED SUCCESS TREATING EATING DISORDERS AS ADDICTIVE DISEASES

As you would expect, the Addictive Disorders Unit at HCA Willow Park Hospital works with chemically addicted patients. What might surprise you is that this is also the hospital’s treatment center lor individuals suffering from eating disorders – anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, obesity. Here, you’ll find a broad mix of people who are addicted to alcohol, drugs and/or food. “There is so much common ground between eating disorders and chemical dependencies,” said Arnold Mech, MD, eating disorders specialist and HCA Willow Park Hospital Medical Director. “I’ve found that they both benefit from the same types of treatment.”

“It is quite simply, the logical way to treat eating disorders – as addictive diseases.” stated Mech. “Just like chemical dependencies, eating disorders are compulsive, uncontrollable behaviors with underlying psychological and biochemical influences,” he said.

The HCA Willow Park Hospital Eating Disorders Program provides medical evaluation, individualized treatment and aftercare to men and women age 12 and older. Adolescents and adults are treated in separate Addictive Disorders Units. If you would like additional program information, or wish to arrange an evaluation, call 8678670, ext. 4711.

DR. TORANTO SPEAKS ON BREAST REDUCTION

When patients come to me with complaints of shoulder, neck and back pain caused by enlarged breasts, there’s a certain look in their eyes. The eyes reveal as much emotional pain as physical pain. Teenagers tell me their breasts make them objects of ridicule. Older women tell me they find few things to wear that fit properly.

Breast reduction can be performed as soon as breast development has stabilized. Candidates are often teenagers, women whose breasts do not revert to their previous volume following pregnancy or women who have experienced substantial breast growth at menopause.

Reductions involve a partial mastectomy preserving breast tissue centrally. The nipple is repositioned upward and excess skin is removed through an incision that leaves a minimal scar. Patients may elect day surgery or a 1-2 day hospital stay. They can return to work in 4-5 days and participate in sports after 3 weeks.

Dr. I. Richard Toranto is a board certified plastic surgeon and member of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. He is medical director of the Aesthetic Surgical Center, a fully accredited office-surgery center at 3900 W. 15th St., Piano. For more information, call 596-7332.

LIP0SUCTION

Liposuction is a surgical technique to remove localized collections of excess fat, and in the last five years this surgery has become the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure.

Congenital deposits of tatty subcutaneous tissue appear in females in the hips, thighs, buttocks or abdomen and in males commonly in the abdomen and flanks. Liposuction should be reserved for those with congenital fat deposits, not for those who are overweight due to poor dietary and exercise habits.

The procedure is performed under anesthesia (local or general). A small incision 3/8 to 1/2 inch is made in an inconspicuous area, and a small tube is inserted and attached to a vacuum apparatus that suctions out fat,

Liposuction can be performed as an outpatient procedure in the office, surgery center or hospital. Most patients may return to work in three or four days, and then resume normal activities in two weeks.

THE STRESS CYCLE

Stress in any of its forms can disrupt the proper function of the body’s intricately balanced systems. Stress frequency, intensity and duration determine the degree of hindered body function, resultant disorders and loss of resistance to disease. Thus the effects of stress play the most important role in the disease process.

Auto accidents, childhood and sports injuries often lead . to accelerated stress reaction with chronic pain and disease. Poor nutrition and mental stress often contribute greatly to the body’s reaction to stress. The Chiropractic Center of Texas strives to treat not only the effects or symptoms of dysfunction and disease, but more importantly their ultimate causes – specific stresses. By correcting vertebral misalignments and balancing the body in other ways, the chiropractor relieves the major stresses on both the nervous system and the entire body. The extent to which all stresses can be minimized determines the body’s ability to restore and maintain its optimum health, Dr. Roland D. Nadeau, Chiropractic Center of Texas 850 S. Greenville, Suite 104, Richardson, 680-8333.
