IN THEIR OWN WORDS

(Dallas Morning News editor Burl Osborne, talking to Governor Clements in an off-record session re play-for-pay at SMU)

Clements: The recording instrument is off, isn’t it? And this is not only deep background and off the record, it’s deep, deep.. . Have you ever heard of a person named Candy Barr?

Osborne: Sure, the stripper.

Clements: [George Owen] was married to her. And this guy is just-you know, he’s in a different orbit than most of us are. And don’t ask me why he does the things he does. He’s sort of an out-in-front, showboat kind of guy that you would imagine would marry Candy Barr. But he’s also an alum of SMU, so you know, he does these crazy things.
