Sic, Sic, Sic

I shall do all in my power to kill out a magazine such as your’s. You can quote me. Evidently you folks don’t know what fairness, above board, integrety, honest are any other good words are. Your article on the Mayors race [March) is what I refer to. You wrote the article as if only four political poli-tians who have announced that they intend to spend $500,000 to 1. mil each on a $50.00 a week job-if this isn’t buying an election I don’t know what is. And I’ve so stated in my speeches which I’ve included a few. It’s people like you that keep many good honest citizen from seeking office. You’ve just in your article endored the more you spend the smarter you are. Your theory is if I put an ape up there to run and out spent the rest of the folk in the race he be the best one for the mayor.

To bring out an article even before certification shows everyone just how unfair you really are. I state again you are a lier.

When I get to city hall I will tell you one person or group of person’s that I will not see or talk to in any form or fashion, Guess who?

The Housing Crisis

Having spent twelve years as an inspector and supervisor in litter control and the housing departments with the City of Dallas, I congratulate D Magazine on its excellent ar-ticle on Dallas slumlords [“Lords of the Flies,” February]. Some of the names such as Hall, Topletz, and Southern Oaks bring back memories of leaky roofs, sagging foundations, and broken windows. One wonders why, since the mid-Seventies, these slumlords can operate with virtual immunity, while poor people have to endure rats.

In order to set the record straight, let me say that Triland International was never owner of the Webbs Chapel Project [“Not in My Back Yard.” February]. If Richard West would have done his homework properly, he would have noticed that during every zoning hearing it was clearly stated who the owner was and that Triland International was hired as a consultant to secure zoning for the property for the account of the owner. The entire zoning matter was very damaging to Triland International’s reputation, The rest of the article was well done and very interesting.

The Greater Dallas Board of Realtors agrees wholeheartedly with you (“Editor’s Page,” February] that the low-income housing situation in Dallas is one of the most im-portant and serious issues fecing our city. So much so, in fact, that last year we appointed a Low-Income Housing Task Force to look into what’s currently being done to help the situation, what needs to be done, and how our members and our organization can help. In your column you mentioned the “landlord registration” proposal that the city council has been wrestling with for several months and stated that it “has been stymied by opposition from realtors for the past year-not a promising sign.”

We have offered to help the city seek a legislative remedy in Austin that would enable this and every city in Texas to seek relief in municipal rather than district courts when faced with landlords who refuse to bring their property up to code. Such a measure would save the cities a great deal of time and expense in “going after” these recalcitrant property owners, and should go a long way toward solving this problem.

A Matter of Taste

Cheers to D for Liz Logan’s delicious “Eating for Love” [February]. As always, her suggestions are amusing and accurate. Whether I’m planning an elaborate evening or choosing a good barbecue joint, I can always count on her trusty tips.

I recently canceled my subscription to D Magazine. After receiving the February 1987 issue, I was disappointed in the front cover. I am sure your magazine has some good information in it; however, that particular issue is not in keeping with the moral standards of our family. Thus I would like to cancel my subscription.
