DALLAS City of Winners

Even in the midst of frenetic progress, some things still remain constant. Perhaps they only draw us back to simpler times. Or perhaps serve as gentle reminders that, with change, there can also come stability. On the firmest foundations are built the finest Structures.



So it is with the only major building in Dallas which dates to the last century, the Cathedral Santuario de Guadalupe. Presiding gracefully over the bustling Dallas Arts District, the former Sacred Heart Cathedral seems almost of another world, as the busy traffic on Ross and Pearl streets swirls all about her.



Actually, as the first Catholic church in Dallas and the mother church of five successive bishops, the cathedral continues today in the same role she has played for almost a century- In the rosy splendor of her deep red brick, her red tile roof, Gothic arches, stained glass windows and white stone trim, she both complements and contrasts with the city’ she serves. She is testimony to the spiritual faith of her many thousands of parishioners and, in her way, she is tribute to a particular faith in Dallas – the faith that what we dream, we can achieve.



Much of the character of all great cities stems from their diversity, in the citizens who are there by birth and by choice, in the great corporations, the arts and the architecture. The cathedral celebrates that richness and variety on which Dallas thrives. It tells us that here, also, much is possible … that the best of our accomplishments are timeless.
