Wasn’t this the summer you rawed the kids would study a second language, figure out the inner
workings of an engine and learn how to bake croissants from scratch? Since this might be a
bit much to cram into the last four weeks of summer, we pose this suggestion. The Heard
Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary in McKin-ney (about thirty minutes north of
Dallas) offers a mini-session just for you late starters. August here means the start of “Nature Games,”
an assortment of outdoor games exploring birds, beetles, and beasts. And there’s plenty of time
to nurture those creative impulses-the kiddos draw and paint at their own pace, using museum
specimens and exhibits as models. The fearless ones can head directly to dissecting class for an inside view of worms,
grasshoppers, and frogs. Also on the agenda are night hikes (there are five miles of nature trails) and a weekend
outing to Fossil Rim Ranch and Dinosaur State Park in Glen Rose. For registration information, call 1-214-542-5566.
The cost of the classes ranges from $15 to $25; the weekend trip is $125.
