Thumbs down to the Dallas Cowboys organization for its obvious attempt to grab headlines away from the Dallas Mavericks and NBA, hosts for the 36th Annual NBA All-Star Game at Reunion Arena last February 9. The Cowboys leaked word to the media the Friday afternoon preceding the Sunday event that they were holding a “very important” news conference Friday evening. As it turned out, the purpose of the news conference was to announce the hiring of San Francisco 49ers’ quarterbacks and receivers coach Paul Hackett as the Cowboys’ passing offense coordinator. Both Dallas newspapers featured the Cowboys’ announcement as their lead story in the Saturday sports sections, and on the day of the game The Dallas Morning News’ lead story was “Cowboys Revamping Front Office.” The timing of the Cowboys1 announcement was an obvious ploy to steal the Mav’s thunder.
