DALLAS City of Winners

By D Magazine |

Traveling west on the roller-coaster route of WestKiest Boulevard as it approaches the toll bridgeacross Mountain Creek Lake, the motorist isconfronted with a breathtaking view of one of themost strategically beautiful college campuses in the UnitedStates – that of Dallas Baptist University. Flung almostcasually across the crest of their picturesque hilltop setting, the buildings already give promise of the greatness and futurepotential of DBU.

Founded in 1898 as Decatur Baptist College, Decatur, Texas, the school opened its doors to an initial enrollment of a handful of students. It moved to its present 200-acre Dallas campus in 1965. With a blue ribbon faculty drawn from such illustrious universities as Columbia, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, West Point and New York University, enrollment has enjoyed a steady annual increase for the past several years. Its full-spectrum, four-year liberal arts curriculum and graduate programs are distinctively Christian in philosophy and practice. The belief that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God is the foundation for all that the school does and teaches.

In 1979, DBU was most fortunate in its selection of a new president, Dr. W. Marvin Watson. A former cabinet member and presidential aide under President Lyndon Baines Johnson, Dr. Watson has also enjoyed a successful career in the business world and thus brings a wealth of experience in several fields to the demanding and challenging task of guiding DBU through the exciting growth years it is currently experiencing. The gratifying financial progress the school is enjoying is largely the result of his unique expertise.

Since Dallas loves a winner, Dallas is destined to love DBU more and more in the future as the university realizes its full potential and takes its place among the prestigious colleges of the nation.
