THUMB AWARD HART-LESS COMMENT

|

Thumbs Down to Dallas City Councilman Jim Hart for refusing to apologize for saying during a public City Council meeting that an effective way to deter criminals is to “hang somebody on the courthouse steps.” He later added that “if someone is caught stealing, they should have their finger cut off, because those kinds of things can get some attention.” Although community activist Roy Williams asked for the apology and criticized Hart’s remarks for being racist, Hart says they were not intended to be. Councilman Al Lipscomb deftly summed up the comments by saying that the comments were not only offensive to minorities but “to a heck of a lot of white people,” too.
