THUMB AWARD JUVENILE CRIME: THE VIDEO

|

Thumbs Up to the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers (DAYL) for winning the 1984 Award of Achievement for Service to the Public by the American Bar Association. DAYL received the award for its 1983 video presentation Crime and Punishment: Two Views of the Juvenile Justice System. The video, which DAYL members voluntarily created, contrasted how a minor is treated by the courts when tried as a juvenile with his treatment when tried as an adult. Dallas attorney Ralph “Red Dog” Jones of Carter, Jones, Magee, Rudberg & Mayes, who was DAYL president last year, says he came up with the idea because he thought that juveniles needed to know about the horrors of being in an adult penitentiary. He says that attorneys Craig Jett and Rick Hayslett pulled the project together. But Jones also gives credit to student actors from the Arts Magnet High School, the Dallas Police Department, the Dallas County Sheriffs Department and the Dallas Juvenile Court. The videotape is now available through the DAYL to high schools and organizations across the state.
