Ski the Rockies with Frontier

|

A new frontier in ski vacations has arrived! This winter, the skiing isnt the only thing that’s smooth. With the advent of Frontier Airline’s new air/ ground transportation link, traveling to the resorts will be as smooth as the slopes. Frontier Airlines is offering total transportation that will make it much easier for area skiers to get to the resorts and that will cut down dramatically on travel time.

Frontier’s new air to sky shuttle will offer several time-saving advantages: Now, passengers can check their baggage and ski equipment to go directly to their destination resort area without having to recheck luggage at the airport. Luggage will be taken directly to the transportation center, and Frontier customer service representatives will be at the ski areas to assist passengers with baggage and seat selection.

While booking your flight, Frontier will even reserve your seats for the ski shuttle. Buses will be waiting at the airport to take passengers to the resorts. All of these extras allow for more hours of ski fun and fewer headaches as well.

Frontier’s new flight schedules, which offer flights earlier and later than in the past, provide maximum time on the slopes and a more flexible schedule for the skier. Are you determined to get in a full five days of skiing? Then take Frontier Flight 499, which departs from Dallas at 7:30 a.m. Monday and arrives in Denver at 8:25 a.m., allowing for an extra full day of fun in the snow. A late flight, No. 466, departs from Denver at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and arrives in Dallas at 8:17 p.m. This addition brings the number of round trip offerings between Denver and Dallas to five.

In addition, weekend flights to ski area gateways- Gunnison and Durango or Grand Junction-are now available for the 1984-85 season. By flying to Gunnison and bypassing Denver’s Stapleton Airport, about three hours can be saved. The flights to Gunnison/Durango depart on weekend afternoons. You can leave Dallas at 2:15 p.m. Saturday and arrive in Gunnison at 3:16 p.m. orarriveinDurango at 4:13p.m. after making a stop in Gunnison. The same flight leaves from Dallas Sunday at 8:45 a.m. and arrives in Gunnison and Durango at 10:15 a.m. and 10:43 a.m., respectively.

The Grand Junction gateway schedule is similar to Gunnison/Durango, with flights departing from Dallas at 9:10 a.m. and arriving in Grand Junction at 10:07 a.m. on Saturday, providing a substantial amount of added ski time. The Sunday Dallas-to-Grand Junction flight departs at 3 p.m. and arrives in ski country at 3:57 p.m. These added weekend flights are great for a head start on that five-day vacation from the job.

BRECKENRIDGE

After the last miner’s pick was retired in Breckenridge, one of the oldest mining towns in Colorado, the town lay dormant for many years. Then, in 1961, the biggest boom of all – skiing -hit the mountains, and Breckenridge has thrived ever since. One of the largest ski resorts in Colorado, Breckenridge offers spacious environs and an attitude of dedication to the historical personality of the town. From the quaint charm of restored Victorian homes to the recent $1.6 million improvement program, the keynote of Breckenridge is atmosphere. The town abounds with period restaurants, and the nightlife is plentiful.

KEYSTONE RESORT

The most noteworthy characteristic of Keystone Resort is undoubtedly its versatility. From the vacationer’s choice of three mountains for skiing to the 33 area restaurants, Keystone offers a wide variety of activities.

After a recent $15 million expansion, Keystone now boasts 15 new ski runs and a “new” third mountain, giving even the most advanced skiers the most to choose from. Keystone, which is 75 miles west of Denver, offers one of the longest ski seasons-from mid-October until late June-since snowmaking is available on Keystone Mountain.

The reputation of Keystone lodging facilities is excellent. Keystone Lodge was given an “Outstanding” Four Star rating in the Mobil Travel Guide and the Five Diamond highest award from the American Automobile Association for excellent service and accommodations. If condos are your preference, there are plenty to choose from at Keystone.

WINTER PARK

One of the older resorts in Colorado, Winter Park was a well-kept secret for many years. Recently, however, the Winter Park facilities have experienced major growth, and the secret is out.

A unique component of Winter Park is the number of family-run lodges and inns. These homey inns provide a nice alternative to the larger hotels and give the skier a taste of the past. The inns offer a nostalgic change of pace for a traditional ski vacation.

COPPER MOUNTAIN

Now one of the top 10 ski resorts in North America, Copper Mountain was once home only to the Indians. The U.S. Forest Service has called Copper Mountain “the most nearly perfect ski mountain in the United States.”

There are 62 trails on Copper Mountain, with half earmarked for intermediate skiers, one-fourth for experts and one-fourth for beginners. Ice skating facilities and 35 kilometers of crosscountry trails are also available.

Copper Mountain receives an abundance of snowfall and is filled with naturally formed award-winning trails. But one of the best features of Copper Mountain is its large ski school. There are extensive programs for beginners and children, making this one of the best ski schools in existence.

ASPEN/SNOWMASS

Aspen, one of the world’s top ski resorts, has been home to skiers for 35 years and has grown from two lifts into a three-mountain, 12-mile spread of breathtaking slopes. All this translates into 3,000 acres of skiing and a historic town with all of its Victorian charm intact.

At Snowmass, just 12 miles from Aspen, the majority of the lodging facilities are right on the mountainside, offering the skier the ultimate in convenience to the slopes. Snowmass is groomed primarily for intermediate skiers and, together with Aspen Mountain, comprises one of the most outstanding ski areas in the country. Since Snowmass is a self-contained community and has all the amenities, trips into Aspen aren’t essential, but rather a nice addition to the Aspen experience.

VAIL/BEAVER CREEK

From its place as the largest ski resort in Colorado, the excitement at Vail Mountain is endless. The unquestionable advantage for Vail skiers is that all of the skiing, whether beginning or the most advanced, takes place on one mountain. This is a big plus for families and large groups. Everyone can ski at their own pace, but together in the same ski area.

The hotel accommodations are plentiful, and the picturesque village at the base of Vail Mountain is a grand array of beautiful shops, clubs and restaurants. Vail offers French, German, Chinese, Italian and American cuisine, so every guest will find just the right place to dine.

STEAMBOAT

Steamboat boasts the most of everything a ski resort can offer. This is one of the largest ski areas in Colorado, and it has long been famous for its champagne powder. Steamboat isn’t just a one-mountain resort – it has tour peaks- and it offers 1,400 acres of skiing at its best.

Steamboat caters to every level of skier. There is plenty of long, wide intermediate terrain for the best cruising around. Beginning skiers feel right at home because Steamboat has one of the best ski schools. Olympic silver medalist Billy Kidd is director of skiing at Steamboat, and with a staff of 175 instructors, learning to ski is just a few lessons away.

TELLURIDE

Telluride Mountain lies in the spectacular San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. At the base of the mountain is the town of Telluride – an old mining town rich in the history and flavor of a bygone era. The town’s main street is still lined with tum-of-the-century hotels and brothels converted into quaint restaurants and lodges. Telluride is remote, yet accessible-the perfect skiing combination.

CRESTED BUTTE

With Frontier Airline’s new direct flights, Dallas skiers can be on the slopes the same morning they arrive at Crested Butte. Beautiful Crested Butte is only 30 miles away from Gunnison, one of the new stops on Frontier’s Ski Gateway specials. Thanks to these flights, skiers have the option of extending their vacation a day or leaving home a day later. Like the Grand Junction and Durango flights, vacationers going to Crested Butte can avoid Denver’s Stapleton Airport.

PURGATORY

Purgatory is now easily accessible on Frontier’s flights into Durango. Located high in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, Purgatory is growing in popularity every year. Blessed with warm weather and sunshine, Purgatory is a great place to tan while you ski.

Located in an authentic western town, Purgatory offers a more remote location than some of the larger resorts. For a different skiing experience, helicopter skiing is available: Take a helicopter high into the mountain range and ski down for a new twist on the sport!
