The Dallas Mavericks continue to win the city’s heart, but all progress comes at a price. Jim Spanarkel, the last of the original Dallas Mavericks, was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks on October 2 and retired three days later. He led the team in scoring, averaging 14.4 points a game, when the Mavs made their 15-67 debut in 1980. That same year, he led the team in steals with 117. Spanarkel also holds the Mavs’ record for highest free-throw percentage (.86) and has the third highest total number of game minutes behind current team members Brad Davis and Jay Vincent. Although Spanarkel saw little action during the past two years and spent the 1983 season on the bench with injuries, he was competent, friendly and unassuming. He will be missed.
