MANY SPORTSMEN come to Hawaii for golf alone. In addition to first-rate courses, some of which are unusually challenging, mountain landscapes and seaside vistas make golf Hawaiian-style more than just a game.

Turtle Bay Hilton (Oahu). On the northern tip of the island, windy and tough. Par 72; 7,061 yards.

Kalua Koi (Molokai). Hilly, with five holes bordering the ocean. Par 72; 6,599 yards.

Kapalua Golf Club (Maui). Two spectacular courses at the base of a pineapple plantation, the tougher being the Links. Par 71; 6,194 yards.

Kauai Surf (Kauai). At the Kauai Surf hotel in Lihue. A mild, pleasant course with lakes and an ocean view. Par 72; 6,808 yards.

Makaha Resort West (Oahu). Excellent course, with splendid scenery of green cliffs and the coast. 50 minutes from Waikiki. Par 72; 7,252 yards.

Mauna Kea Resort (Hawaii). Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and generally considered the toughest course in the islands. View of the coast from every hole. Par 72; 7000 yards.

Mauna Lani Bay Resort (Hawaii). The Francis H. I’i Brown course, a stunning formation carved into the lava. Memorable. Par 72; 6,183 yards.

Pali (Oahu). A lush course at the foot of the Koolau mountains. Par 72; 6,493 yards.

Princeville Makai (Kauai). Superior. Three nine-hole courses-Ocean, Woods and Lake-near the Na Pali coast. Each par 36.

Royal Kaanapali (Maui). The North Course, an annual stop on the LPGA tour, designed in 1962 by Robert Trent Jones Sr. with views of the ocean, the mountains, Molokai and Lanai. Par 72; 7,179 yards.

Waikoloa Beach Park (Hawaii). Complementing the Sheraton Royal Waikoloa. Palm trees, bougainvilla and oleander adorn this oceanside course which is spotted also by ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs and burial caves. Par 71; 6,003 yards.

Waialae Country Club (Oahu). Dog legs and palm trees bordering the ocean at Hawaii’s most exclusive private country club, site of the annual Hawaiian Open. Members and guests only. Par 72; 6,668 yards.

Wailea Beach (Maui). Two of the most attractive and well-groomed courses in Hawaii sitting in constant sunshine. Both par 72; 6,810 yards and 6,700 yards.

Wailua (Kauai). Golf Digest rated this one of the 10 best public courses in America. Built on the coast among sand dunes ironwood trees. Par 72; 6,665 yards.
