THUMB AWARD PARENTS, PAY UP

|

Thumbs Up to attorney Louise Raggio for mustering support of Proposition 6, a constitutional amendment that would allow courts to order wage garnishments on parents who fail to pay child support. Only 20 percent of parents owing child support pay in full and on time. Nearly 160,000 children living in single-parent homes are on welfare and receive no support from the non-custodial parent. The language of the bill is reasonable: An existing court order must be established before proceedings can begin; the parent must have missed paying one payment or more within the last year; and the total amount of child support owed must equal or exceed the amount due for a two-month period. Texas and South Carolina are the only two states in the nation without such a law. Proposition 6, which will be on the ballot November 8, must pass-it’s time to make those who are responsible pay.
