THUMB AWARD SCHOOL BOARD BLUES

|

Thumbs Down to the Dallas Independent School District board members who recently rejected a proposal to form a committee to discuss the DISD’s desegregation program with concerned parents. Although work with specially formed committees can be tedious and tiresome, it’s fer from unnecessary. And the point becomes more dramatic when issues as sensitive as desegregation are being considered. One board member suggested that to allow the formation of the committee would take some responsibility away from the school board. Perhaps that’s best. With the Dallas educational system in such an uproar, school board members need all the help they can get. Also, Thumbs Down to school board member Kathlyn Gilliam for opposing the targeting of desegregation funds to the specific grade levels that could best use them, grades 4-6 (K-3 are already receiving special funds). At these early levels, marked improvements can be made.
