Thumbs Up to Chris Reed-Brown and to attorneys Merrill Hartman, Will Pryor and some 50 other local lawyers who have been instrumental in the establishment of three free legal clinics in Dallas. The first one opened in South Dallas last May and was so well-received by the community that clinics were subsequently opened in East and West Dallas neighborhoods. All service is offered on a pro bono (free) basis, and attorneys will give advice on almost any type of legal case except criminal or fee-generating cases. According to Reed-Brown, who is the private bar involvement coordinator for the North Central Texas Legal Services, the most common recipients of the free legal assistance are battered spouses and the “moderately employed.” But Reed-Brown says that volunteers at the clinic won’t turn away anyone who needs advice. Hartman is in private practice, and Pryor is an attorney with Thompson & Knight.
