Thumbs Up to the Dallas Police Department for recommending that a 45-miles-per-hour speed limit be imposed on heavy trucks driving within the city limits. Trucks account for only 4 percent of the city’s traffic, but close to 40 percent of traffic fatalities. After conducting a study, the police department also recommended citywide lane restrictions and strict weight-and-maintenance inspections be imposed. Police Capt. Leo Savall says that truck drivers are intimidating other drivers within the city. Some representatives of the trucking industry say that the slowdown will add to traffic problems. The slowdown several years ago from 75 to 55 mph was also opposed by those who believed the change would cause traffic problems. Once imposed, however, we found that driving more slowly didn’t really disrupt our schedules; all it did was save lives.
