THUMB AWARD HEGGINS AND HORNE

By D Magazine |

Thumbs Down to Councilwoman Elsie Faye Heggins for discouraging performer Lena Home from appearing at Dallas’ Majestic theater. Heggins has a history of stirring up attention for her own purposes; she often takes on a cause for the black community when the situation doesn’t warrant the attention. This time, her actions angered many South Dallas blacks. She says her complaint about Home’s engagement was that the prices for the opening night gala to benefit TACA, a Dallas arts group, were overpriced and discriminated against the poor and blacks. She also complained that galas should not be held in public buildings, overlooking the fact that these events occur all the time. Mayor Evans says she is making a political situation out of something that’s not political. We say it must be getting close to election time.
