Thumbs Down to Dallas County Commissioners for building a new $61 million jail that doesn’t work. The Lew Sterrett Justice Center was supposed to alleviate crowding in the old jail. but now cornmissioners are proposing that two-thirds of the cells remain empty. Granted, this will save taxpayers more than $1 million in operating costs next year, but that’s a small comfort when you realize that several millions more will be needed to complete the facility, and a bond election may be held to raise funding next year. Construction costs have been a problem, but surely better planning could have prevented this debacle.
