THE ICE OF TEXAS

Perfect for Texas-OU Weekend entertaining -providing your sympathies lie this side of the Red River -are trays that turn out ice cubes in the shape of the Lone Star State. Called (what else?) The Ice of Texas, they’re $12 for two trays. At Cutter Bill Western World, 5818 LBJ Freeway. Open Mon-Fri 10-9, Sat until 6. 239-3742.

IT’S A CINCH

Castle Gap Trading Company has been selling Southwestern jewelry in Preston Center for 10 years, but never before has its selection been more fashionable-in particular, its array of concho belts. Of course, you’ll need one this fall to wear with your Ralph Lauren Navajo sweater or designer jeans, and Castle Gap can offer an excellent deal at 30 per cent under suggested retail. Even so, you’ll have to invest from $150 to $1500, but for the lasting beauty of a concho – which transcends fashion fads – the dollars are well spent. Castle Gap is also the only store in town that specializes in appraisal of Southwestern silver jewelry. Castle Gap Trading Company, 8403 Preston Road. Open Mon-Sat 10-5:30. 361-1677.

PANDORA’SLOAVES

Who said Pandora’s box contains only sorrow and disorder? These Pandora’s loaves prove otherwise. They’re rounds of seedless rye filled with sandwiches made from their soft centers – thin-sliced layered wedges filled with one of a number of ingredient combinations. The standard filling is roast beef and horseradish butter alternated with layers of ham and tarragon butter. Other fillings include turkey breast or artichoke in combination with a variety of cream-cheese spreads. Or try the tantalizing combination of crab salad, cucumber, and watercress. A one-pound loaf used as an appetizer amply serves 10 to 12. The Pandora’s loaves are the trademark of their creators, Carr’s Catery (formerly Carr’s of Dallas). The company is a Dallas counterpart of Carr’s of Providence, caterers in New England since the turn of the century. (Carr’s did the Jacqueline Bouvier-JFK wedding.) Carr’s of Dallas was opened two years ago by Lee Kelly, great-granddaughter of the original Carr’s founder. In Carr’s North Dallas storefront, you can relax in the reception area, plan your next party, sip a glass of wine, and sample a Pandora’s loaf. Incidentally, the standard loaf is excellent for freezing to have ready for the spur of the moment. A standard loaf is $13.50; a large loaf is $15. At Carr’s Catery, 14050 Peyton Drive. Open Mon-Sat 9-6. 387-1929.

ALLIGATOR SHOES

You think you’ve seen Izod everything, but what about shoe laces? You’ll find them, with the alligator logo creeping from tip to tip, at Winterberry, an unusual general store full of novelties – some manufactured, some handmade. The shoe laces are $1.50 per pair, at Winterberry, 5719-A W. Lovers Lane. Open Mon-Fri 9:30-5:30, Sat 10-5. 350-1567.

BORDER LINE BAKERY

You won’t find a bakery like Henry’s anywhere else in town. While other Mexican bakeries turn out heavy, dense pastries caked with pink icing, Henry’s purveys an array of goodies that’s light and delicate. One patron says Henry’s comes the closest you can get in Dallas to the baked goods of Mexico City. (Actually Henry Cavazos and his wife, Maria, come from Monterrey.) The house specialty is a fragrant loaf of bread seasoned with anise ($1.30) that’s offered only on Saturday and Sunday. Since Henry’s opens at 6 a.m., it’s a good idea to plan ahead: Go by at a decent hour on Friday, pay for a loaf, and have one reserved. For a good selection of pastries, be sure to get there by noon. Henry’s Bakery, 2404 N. Fitzhugh. Open Tue-Sun 6 a.m.-8 p.m. 824-0971.

OPEN SESAME

All automatic garage-door openers are made to reverse themselves upon impact with an obstacle, but often don’t before they’ve done some damage. Now there’s a garage-door opener that will reverse before impact. It’s the Chamberlain 1020 Liftmaster Protector Series, featuring a photoelectric eye installed in the track. At $209, it’s a wise investment since any damage done by a conventional model could be far greater. Available at Irving Ventilating and Installation Company, 13336 Preston Road. Open Mon-Fri 8-5, Sat until 2. 661-9568.

MAKING UP IS HARD TO DO

Makeup artist GiGi Coker has long been a part of the Dallas fashion industry as one of those behind-the-scenes people who make models picture perfect. Last summer, she opened her own makeup studio in Chelsea Square, aptly named About Face. There, anyone can learn the tricks of the trade. In an hour and a half session costing $60, Mrs. Coker can show you where to highlight, how to contour, what colors work for you, and how to go from day to evening -basically what is best for your face and how to put it where it’s supposed to go. Because most of her time is still spent working in photography and film, she does consultations by appointment only, including nights and weekends. She encourages clients to get involved in the lesson by having them diagram her work on a face chart that she furnishes or by bringing a blank cassette tape to record the lesson. 3136 Routh, Suite 102 B. 748-2304.
