Thumbs Up to the Texas Legislature for its passage of the generic drug bill, which now makes it possible for customers to request their pharmacist to provide them with the generic substitute for any prescribed medication. The Austin lawmakers approved the bill despite strong opposition from pharmaceutical manufacturers and the Texas Medical Association, although the TMA later changed its stance and eventually endorsed the measure. The Federal Trade Commission estimates the bill will save Texas consumers $16 million annually. “Passing that bill was the best thing that came out of the entire legislative session,” says Mesquite Rep. Ted Lyon, the bill’s sponsor.
