Thumb Awards

Thumbs Down: To District Attorney Henry Wade for meddling in the case of county annex court judge Claude Williams. Five highly respected fellow judges had recommended the ouster of Williams, 73, on the basis of numerous complaints from defense attorneys. Wade, obviously a fan of Williams’ notorious bias toward the prosecution, backed the judges down. Regardless of the validity of the charges against Williams, it is utterly inappropriate for the county’s chief prosecutor to be dictating who is a fit judge and who isn’t.

Thumbs Up: To Channel 5 for airing “Scared Straight,” the award-winning documen-tary about a bold program for rehabilitating juvenile lawbreakers. Despite rampant profanity in the film, Channel 5 refused to edit it – a courageous move, considering the Bible Belt sensibilities of many of its viewers. Additional kudos to Park Cities Baptist Church for sponsoring the panel discussion that followed the program.

Thumbs Up: To the Dallas Black Hawks for winning the 1979 Adams Cup, symbolic 0f the Central Hockey League championship. As always, the Hawks did it amidst little fanfare and minimal media coverage; but their 24 victories in the last 27 games rank as one of the more extraordinary achievements in Dallas sports history. Special credit to Most Valuable Player, goaltender Curt Ridley.

Thumbs Down: To the Dallas Black Hawks for destroying

their Salt Lake City hotel rooms in the revelry following their final victory. The Hawks were ejected from the hotel and two players thrown in jail, including Most Valuable Player Curt Ridley.
