Amon Gets the Final Word

By D Magazine |

For some reason, American Airlines seems to attract pilots who are latent comedians. The pilots sometimes just can’t resist a captive audience and a good public address system. Passengers on a flight from Dallas-Fort Worth to Phoenix several months ago said their pilot played recordings of a freight train, told jokes, and played his harmonica.

But on a recent flight from D/FW to Los Angeles, an American pilot chose the wrong audience. Among the passengers was Amon Carter Jr., publisher of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and senior member of the airlines’ board of directors. After the pilot told the first few jokes, Carter sent his business card to the cockpit via a flight attendant. On the back he had written a simple message: “Shut up.” The pilot did.
