Moving Spirits

Among life’s nasty necessities moving ranks second only to paying taxes. And like taxes, moving problems can loom larger for the modest apartment dweller than for the homesteader who fills up a Mayflower van. With his new Wee Haul company, George Killick offers apartment dwellers (only) a more attractive option: Simply complete a check list of items to be moved, and Killick will compute the cost based on stairs to climb, items to tote, and miles to go. Moves average $70, approximately $15 less than the cost of renting a truck. Sorry, no pianos, full-sized refrigerators, or pool tables – two movers hand-carry everything. Wee Haul, Inc., 10700 N Central Expwy (Meadow Rd exit). 738-0222.

Petticoat Junction

When you feel the need to box the gnat, scoot and dodge, or spin the windmill, there’s no choice but to find seven other people and do it. Luckily, with 150 clubs, local square dancers number in the thousands. And each needs an outfit: petticoats fuller than dreams, Mary Jane shoes for the perfect step and slide, and string, bolo, and scarf ties. The colors that fill Dallas’ only one-stop square dance shop dazzle the imagination and send the heart back a beat in time. Carolyn Roessler and Sonia Hetherington, owners of the C Bar S Square Dancing and Round Dancing Apparel, will outfit the complete square dancer and advise the novice on where to find lessons. But hurry, most clubs begin lessons in September. C Bar S Square and Round Dancing Apparel, 5632 E Mockingbird. 823-5712. Mon-Sat 10-5:30.

Waxing Nostalgic

Record buffs can now find life after Peaches: Metamorphosis Records, a tiny store on Allen St., stocks secondhand records of top quality, as well as underground imports, art rock, New Wave, and jazz. Collectors can find picture discs (the artist or group is pictured directly in the disc) and colored platters. If you’re on the lookout for a collector’s item – say, a Beatles release on the original Capitol label – the proprietors, Mike and Barbara Rainey, will take your name and call if it comes in. While you’re there, let them introduce you to Eno, master of the mellow synthesizer. Metamorphosis Records, 2809-A Allen Street (next to Allen Street Gallery). 742-3972. Mon-Sat 10-5:30, Sun noon-5:30.

Tap Dancers

Teter’s Faucet Parts Center is a diagnostic clinic and emergency center for the amateur plumber. Maurice and Gene Teter (father and son) maintain a stock of parts, tools, and standard manufacturers’ parts books for reference; they’ll help you diagnose your plumbing problem and tell you how to fix it. The Teters’ 45 years of experience are especially helpful to those renovating older homes. Teter’s Faucet Parts Center, 2025 Abrams. 823-2153. Mon-Fri 8-5:30, Sat 9-1.

Seams Like Old Times

Marie Studer is no ordinary seamstress. She creates new fashions from old clothes that may be out of style, but feature beautiful material – old silks, linens, woolens, quilted cottons. Marie redesigns dresses, jackets, and vests according to a new pattern, then embellishes the fabric with mirror cloth from India, molas from Guatemala, and embroidered dragons from mainland China. The results are lovely, and durable – Marie calls them lifetime clothes. She works in a nook alongside jewelers, potters, and painters in an Irving gallery, The Main Arterie. If you have a favorite old garment due for some new life, call for an appointment. 135 S Main, Irving. 259-9642

Glass Act

So the neighborhood slugger lined one through your original stained glass window? Well, Don Thompson of Thompson’s Art Glass will repair your stained glass on site. If it’s new glass you need, his brother Steve can design, build, and install stained glass windows that will delight the eye and fill a room with rainbows. Thompson’s Art Glass, 2311 Abrams. 824-3701. Mon-Fri 9-6, Sat 104.
