The Thumb Awards

|

Thumbs Down:To the Fort Worth City Council, to the pickets outside the Tarrant County Convention Center, in fact, to everybody who had anything to do with the whole silly outrage against the performing of Oh! Calcutta! in Fort Worth. Such ado about nothing. Leave that to Peoria.

Thumbs Up: ToDirector Harry Parker and the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts for securing the “Pompeii A.D. 79” exhibit for Dallas, one of only four American cities to be selected. Such artful politicking is no easy matter.

Thumbs Down:To the Dallas Police Department, Stolen Property division. In early February, Wayne Meachum of Oak Cliff reported the theft of his l976 Oldsmobile. A month later, the car still missing, Meachum settled with his insurance company. That was on a Monday. On Tuesday he bought a new car. Wednesday morning the Dallas police called him to inform him that his stolen car had been recovered and was waiting for him at the automobile pound. The car had been discovered when the driver, the thief, had been stopped for a traffic violation. When Meachum arrived on Wednesday afternoon to inspect the car. it was gone. Seems the police had booked the culprit on the traffic violation, released him, and given him back the car. The police finally tracked down the thief, and Meachum has his car back. Unravelling that insurance claim may take a bit longer, though.
