The Race Is On – Again

|

A few weeks ago, a Dallas runner named Miki Hervey sent out a call for volunteers. What she needed was 100 local women who could run. Her object? To break the world record for the 100 X 1-mile relay, a record of 10 hours, 47 minutes, 9.3 seconds set by a team of California women. On the morning of August 6, Miki gathered her team together at the University Park jogging track and the first runner took off. By midday, Miki’s team was well ahead of the record pace. But as the scorching afternoon sun sent temperatures into the upper 90’s the times began to lag. As the hot evening sun began to set, runner # 100 crossed the finish line. The time: 11 hours, 7 minutes, .5 seconds. After running all day, Miki’s team missed the world record by 20 minutes.

“Some of the best runners in the area were on vacation,” explains Miki stoically. “We’ll do it again. And we’ll make it.” Give yourself a break, Miki. Do it in November.
