Some say the tennis boom is over. Don’t kid yourself.
Out on LBJ Freeway between Marsh Lane and Midway Road, unseen behind a long, long wall, there’s a little bit of construction going on. About $9 million and 18 acres worth of tennis. The World Tennis Center (or WTC, as they call it – doubtless not accidentally similar to WCT. the prestigious World Championship Tennis tour) will eventually be “the world’s largest tennis club.”
Should you choose to join this chic little athletic kingdom, here’s what you’ll get for your membership fee (there are 15 options ranging initially from S600-$1200 plus $30-S45 monthly dues escalating as the project moves toward completion in the spring of 1979): 61 tennis courts – that’s right, 61 -36 outdoor, 21 covered (“cooled and heated”) and 4 indoor air-conditioned, all made of a cushioned, polyethylene, “flow-through” surface in a rainbow of colors: 10 racquetball courts; $3 million club house; optional lease of 32 courtside cabanas complete with kitchen, baths, showers, and locker rooms, plus private patio; jogging track; “spectacular swimming pool with the finest lounging furniture;” restaurant; cocktail lounge; health spas; pro shop; game room; child care center; TV lounge; barbeque patio area; beauty shop; barber shop; and 24-hour security. Oh, and a health food store. We heard a rumor that for a little extra you could rent Jimmy Connors to sing and dance in your cabana, but that’s unconfirmed.
