WINDFALLS

By Judy Powell |

Turkey With Dressing

Thanksgiving has been celebrated in this country since 1621, when the Pilgrims invited some Indian neighbors to dinner, but the traditional cornucopia has been around since ancient Greeks filled goats’ horns with fruit and grain as symbols of abundance. This version of the cornucopia, created by Bloomers at 2923 North Henderson, makes an attractive, traditional centerpiece for the Thanksgiving table. It’s filled with fresh and dried flowers, wheat stalks, nuts, berries, vegetables, fruits and gourds. Prices begin at $12.95, depending of the size and type of materials requested. Or inquire about their “Pumpkinellas,” pumpkins with a topknot of wheat stalks and cinnamon sticks tied with a big checked bow. $2 each.

Plastic Surgery

Vinyl was developed to be resistant to all kinds of rough treatment, but it can still tear or melt from a cigarette burn. When it does, the item can often be repaired instead of being thrown away. Gary Hauser, owner of The Vinyl Repair Service, will make house calls to repair rips, tears, bums, or holes up to six inches wide on all kinds of objects: the vinyl roof of your car, car seats, motorcycle and boat seats, furniture or clothing. An estimate is $7.50 but it’s applicable to the cost of fixing the item. Hauser says the damage is repairable ninety-nine percent of the time. For more information call him at 526-2276.

Prints Charming

Remember when it used to be fun to get the yellow pages every year? That was before 1971 when Southwestern Bell standardized all their phone book covers, leaving artist Karl Hoefle out of a job and Dallas telephone subscribers without an intriguing puzzle to solve each year. Hoefle, who died in 1973, spent four to six months each year drawing the covers – always aerial skyline views of the city, but with oddities like horse-drawn carriages on the freeway, clocks reading 7:61 p.m., or motorcyclists flying kites included in the drawings. Often as many as 100 items were “hidden” in each picture. Now his drawings are available as prints courtesy of Southwestern Bell. The set of 18 prints, including his best phonebook covers, is $10 postage paid. Order them from Janet Hoefle, Box 38406, Dallas 75238.

Return of the Native

Primitive Nigerian tribesmen make these animals with bits of string, hides, bones and twigs. Dallasites can now buy them as charming examples of an authentic African folk art. Display them on a table or use them to decorate a package, or your Christmas tree, or as placecard holders at a dinner party. Whimsical interpretations of the giraffe, antelope, ostrich, camel and other native African creatures are priced from $4 to $21. Smallest figure about 7″ high. Exclusively at In Good Company, 2933 North Henderson. Open Monday-Saturday, 9:30 to 5:30.
