Keep on Climbing

What an influence D Magazine has on my life.

Just last night I attended one of those big debutante extravaganzas (about once every five years) where, naturally, cars are parked for all the attendees.

On the way out I reached into my pocket for the usual quarter and then remembered D’s admonition in the October “Social Climber’s Handbook” that the two-bit tip was definitely a “no-no,” so I reached back in, and right now some happy parking attendant is beneficiary of an extra 25¢ piece all because of you.

Couldn’t quite go all the way to a buck – let’s say that’s my Scotch ancestry.

I’m a member of Oak Cliff Country Club and Top-O-The Cliff Club. My office has been at 10th and Jefferson for 30 years. Most of my patients are from the Park Cities. Is it socially correct for me to subscribe?

A.C. Greene’s no-nos for social climbing cost D Magazine my subscription. You see, I prefer to live in Oak Cliff. As a lifelong resident of the area, I have always felt compelled to stand up for Oak Cliff any time a cheap shot is attempted.

I’ll bet you’d find more civic pride in one neighborhood of Oak Cliff than you would be able to muster in all of posh, pushy North Dallas. Many who have moved away have since returned, finding that life really is better “south of the border.” Too bad I won’t be receiving next month’s issue of D (Dumb) Magazine at my nice home in Oak Cliff.

After I passed your October issuearound, another friend went out and bought twelve copies. We think the entire issue is packed with a lot of clout! It is really snobby and we are thrilled!

Since I am from a town and state that is widely acknowledged as being at least a decade behind in everything, I do try to get to “the city” at least once every six weeks to get exposed to the culture, social life, fashion, etc., and, of course, to shop.

My friends and I, not wanting to miss out on anything, do want to ask you a question. We are naive enough to think that Titche’s is an OK place to shop for underwear. However, after reading your article, we are curious as to where the “in” place is to do this kind of shopping.

For the best (and worst) place to buy underwear, consult our story beginning on page 55. There may be a surprise in store.

Who Helped Thomas Win?

I read with great interest Jim Atkinson’s “Election Postmortem for Pundits and Pols” in the December issue of D Magazine.

As Campaign Manager for Carl Thomas, I will be the last to dispute your statement that the Thomas campaign was indeed underFINANCED. Therefore, I will have difficulty in denying that Thomas may have, for this reason, been underEXPOSED. Under-WHELMING might be a matter of subjective perception on your part, though apparently many of your fellow members of the media felt that neither the issues nor the candidate were particularly newsworthy prior to November 2.

I do, though, feel compelled to take issue with the phrase “. . . in general without the organizational help he needed from the county GOP machinery . . .”

The Thomas campaign received more dollars from the county GOP than any candidate in recent history. We could not have asked for more assistance.

Pocket Money?

I hope D Magazine didn’t reimburse David Bauer all the money he says he lost to the books on football games (December). If so, you’re out 11 perfectly good U.S. bucks.

Losses the first day totalled $231 and winnings totalled $90. Unless my trusty calculator is playing tricks, that leaves a net loss of $141, not $152.

Morris F. Baughman Dallas

Thanks for the tip. All right, David, ’fess up.
