Today North Dallas, Tomorrow the World

Sears, sometimes referred to by businessmen as “the 5th Estate,” never has much problem finding prime locations in shopping centers – mainly because it often develops entire shopping centers in which to place its stores. First it was Valley View, at LBJ and Preston, and now there are reportedly plans for another Sears-owned shopping center to be developed around the Sears store at Piano Road and Belt Line.

The development, a joint venture of Homart Development Co. of Chicago and Edward J. DeBartolo Co. of Youngstown, Ohio, will evolve much like Valley View: a variety of retail establishments clustered around an already-existent Sears store. Calls to Homart in Chicago concerning details of the development were received with stony silence. No zoning requests have shown up at Richardson City Hall, and no starting date has been discussed publicly. But you can bet on one thing: word of the planned shopping center is likely to be affecting land prices already in that east Richardson area.
