100 Ideas

I was so impressed by your article on “100 Ideas to Make Dallas a Better Place” in the March issue that I had to write to say how much I enjoyed it.

As I looked over the ideas, it is obvious that in order to carry them out everyone must get involved in some way or another. But, since most require some type of monetary backing or support, I think it is very important that private business be involved from the outset.

I don’t know where you and your staff came up with all of your ideas but it was obviously the result of some imaginative brainstorming. The article encouraged me to widen my scope and look at things in a new light. I think this type of brainstorming is needed more in all areas of our society. Too often, I think we get bogged down in conventional (maybe traditional) ways of looking at our problems when what is needed is a fresh new approach.

Let’s hope your “ideas” have encouraged others as much as they have encouraged me. Then let’s further hope that at least some are acted on so they just don’t remain ideas.

“100 Ways To Make Dallas a Better Place,” indeed! If you will turn to page six you will notice that your advertiser is showing dress shirts and ties. But -on page sixty you say “let’s do away with the ludicrous item -the tie!” Do you realize how many people in this city make their living by selling ties and all that goes with them?

Do you realize what your suggestion would do to the clothing business, not to mention dress shirts? The income from ties buys your magazine, and pays the bill when we visit the local theaters, restaurants and the shops of all of your advertisers.

A pox on you D Magazine!

Pat Harrison

(ED: It merely shows we’re an open, objective publication. On the one hand we recommend a summer moratorium on ties while on the other we’re still advertising them.)

I must compliment you on your recent issue of D, especially the article by Jim Pratt, as well as the 100 ideas to make Dallas a better place. I hope all of the promoters who want to move the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts from Fair Park have read and digested Jim’s history and proposals for the future. I also hope that some of the “ideas” will be picked up and put into effect. We have a super city but the activation of many of these things will make it much more pleasing to the eye, ear, and emotional feelings.

Thank you for the March issue of D.

D-Lighted

D is even finer -quality and content-than we had anticipated! Keep up the good work.

The monthly calendar is excellent!

Wdowiak The Best

Into your second year, and for my money, steadily improving would be a fair appraisal of your magazine. More specifically, it seems to me that month in and month out, despite generally good articles, the most consistent, freshly written, interesting and stimulating articles are Mr. Victor Wdowiak’s contributions.

His personal and pleasingly austere style, impish critiques, as well as his informational offerings endear him to the reader. They are continuing evidence that he deserves Horchow’s simple but elegant catalogue title, “Mr. Victor.” Thank you for sharing him with your readers.

How’s That Again?

I enjoyed your good article on Theatre Three. In this electronic age, it looks like there would be some way of hearing better in the Theatre Three. Frequently, when the actor’s back is toward where I am sitting, it is difficult to understand all that is said. True my hearing isn’t 20/20 (sic), but maybe there are others in like condition. The Misanthrope was a good play, wish I could have heard more of it. Could you fellers suggest to Mr. Alder some way of overcoming this condition?

We Give Up

I may be hexed

I may be vexed

And even perplexed

But never MetroplexedA steak dinner for the entire staff of D at the new Sheraton Safari Hotel in Grand Prairie if you’re right and I’m wrong!

See if the Greenhouse doesn’t pay their city taxes to Grand Prairie! I believe this is called “investigative reporting.” You should try it!

Kathleen Johnson

Grand Prairie

(ED: We now have it straight -we hope, oh, do we hope. The Greenhouse is in Grand Prairie, it does pay taxes to the City of Grand Prairie and school taxes in Arlington, though it has an Arlington address. We don’t know why it’s like that, but it is. Ms. Johnson, you can put your money back in your purse. Danny Russo, manager of Arthur’s, has graciously stepped forward with a peace offering: a free steak dinner for you on the evening of your choice.)
