The burnt orange chesterfield catches your eye first. Perched in the window of an unassuming brick building in the Design District, the couch is the first sign that new showroom SofaWorks deserves a peek inside. Then you notice the price tag.
The harvest-hued beauty goes by Roxy and rings up at just under $1,600. A few feet away, find the curvy Cipriano and the low-slung Milan, also reasonably priced. And that’s just for starters.
The proprietor behind this trove of high-style yet cost-conscious couches is Southern California transplant Don Jefferies. The 40-year furniture industry veteran made his mark in Los Angeles, catering to tastemakers in search of affordable custom upholstered seating, before decamping to Dallas to set up his first retail venture. His space on Irving Boulevard is devoid of the typical showroom bells and whistles.
White brick walls and concrete floors allow the dozen or so featured sofas to take center stage. Jefferies further lowers costs by avoiding back stock in favor of made-to-order pieces manufactured at his facility in Los Angeles.
You can have any of the existing designs (there are hundreds) tweaked by size, cushion filling, fabric, and detailing. The process takes five to seven weeks from design to delivery. Or you could start from scratch. Jefferies is up for that, too.
