Change is good. Just ask Autumn, Dawn, and Jennifer Smink, owners of Smink, inc., the 20-year-old modern home design showroom that recently relocated to the Design District. “It’s so fun down here,” says Autumn of their new locale. The Smink sisters’ showroom is open to the public, so pop in and check out their stunning merchandise, most of which is exclusive to Dallas. The siblings moved into the 11,000-square-foot Dragon Street space that was formerly the Gerald Peters Gallery. The new Smink has floating walls, an on-site warehouse, artwork from the Barry Whistler Gallery (“We had so much more wall space here, we had to call Barry,” Autumn says), and a loading dock—features absent from the Lovers Lane spot. And it’s hard to miss the 103-inch television from Sound Image. The idea is to make shopping in the Design District less intimidating. “The barriers are down around here,” Autumn says. “People are really discovering the area. It’s exciting.” Smink, Inc., 1019 Dragon St. 214-350-0542. www.sminkinc.com.Magic Carpet Ride

The Odegard, Inc. folks, known for their gorgeous handmade carpets, have hopped over Industrial and opened up a bigger, better showroom that triples the amount of merchandise they can display. Not only is the new showroom much larger (4,400 square feet, to be exact), it has great natural light (four skylights!) and plenty of good synergy—Odegard’s Glass Street neighbors soon will include the Dallas Contemporary art gallery. Stop by the showroom for a look at the Faces of Freedom exhibition, featuring photos of former child laborers in India, Pakistan, and Nepal and benefiting www.rugmark.org.
