Add Sputnik Modern to the many reasons that Henderson Avenue is becoming more of a destination than a quick-stop locale. In keeping with the scene, Sputnik is offbeat and beyond cool, specializing in vintage 20th-century decorative arts ranging from the 1930s to as recent as the 1980s. Owner Chris Thurman was selling his finds exclusively on the web. But as the site’s popularity grew, Thurman realized that he needed an old-fashioned brick-and-mortar show space. Fate intervened when he saw the “For Lease” sign on his dream location, a renovated 1940s-era service station. “Honestly, the timing was right, the building was right, and the area was right,” he says. And thanks to six months of hitting estate sales and antique shows across the country, the new store is chock-full of treasures. Sputnik Modern. 1901 N.
