Neighborhood Spotlight: West Highland Park

By D Magazine |

In 1924, originally part of Highland Park located west of the Cotton Belt Railroad (now Dallas North Tollway)

Location:
West of the Dallas North Tollway, east of Westside Drive, south of Mockingbird Lane and north of Lemmon Avenue

Population Size:
375 homes

What You’ll Find:
Charming cottages, the majority of which were built in the 1930s and ’40s, abound with some new construction sprinkled in. The area was originally developed by the architects and builders, notably Wilson McClure, who were erecting larger homes in Highland Park. New construction today still manages to retain the original charm of the older homes, says West Highland Park resident and real estate mogul David Nichols.

Average Home Price:
$600,000 to $800,000

Lot Value:
$400,000 to $700,000

Average Lot Size:
50 by 140 feet

Average House Size:
Original cottages are typically between 1,500 and 2,800 square feet; newer houses are 4,500 square feet on average.

Why West Highland Park?
It’s a quiet area near some of Dallas’ best shopping, including Highland Park and Inwood Villages, while offering easy access to the Tollway, and comes with Highland Park police, fire, and other city services.

Local Haunts:
Whole Foods at Lomo Alto Drive and Lemmon Avenue is a convenient spot for picking up organic groceries and flowers, and meeting neighbors. Toy’s Café Thai Food, just a few steps east of Whole Foods, is a favorite takeout restaurant, while Alfredo Trattoria dishes up Italian standards to loyal West Highland Park customers.

Who’s Buying?
Young professionals and couples who are just starting a family are neighbors to empty nesters.
