My Great Garage Sale Find
Who: Janelle Stone, antique appraiser and estate sale liquidator
What: Chinese-export platter in celadon and blue pattern, circa 1750s
For a mere: $26
Appraised at: $2,500
Back story: Stone was at a garage sale in Mineola and spotted the Chinese porcelain. It was propped up next to an ugly turkey platter. When she went to pay, the owner tried to persuade her to buy the turkey platter instead because her piece had cigarette burns on it. I don’t specialize in Oriental, but I knew it was better than something you’d find at Tuesday Morning. She recently saw a dish in the same pattern in a museum in London.
