Luxus lands acclaimed Barovier line

Barovier’s Satay Lantern

Legendary Italian glassmaker Barovier, which has been seeking the right Dallas purveyor for several years for its new collection of fresh contemporary designs, has found a home at Luxus showroom in the Dallas Design District. Owner Hilda Rodriguez Yong has brought in the entire 50-piece Forma collection, which is designed to appeal to a younger customer. “Designers and architects are already going crazy over it,” says Young, who is busy reordering already. One of the best sellers is the Penda chandelier, whose design can be changed by altering the suspension of the hand-blown glass drops. The collection includes table lamps, torchieres, pendants, chandeliers, and sconces. Also brand-new at Luxus is Christian Plasman’s hot new furniture company, Bolier & Company. Plasman, who was responsible for bringing design luminaries John Black, Michael Vanderbyl, and Barbara Barry to Baker, Knapp & Tubbs, left three years ago taking Vanderbyl and Black with him. Vanderbyl’s Rosenau collection for Bolier is a youthful reinterpretation of Biedermeier in mahogany, while the Domicile collection is transitional in dark woods, ebony, and much-sought-after macassar ebony. John Black’s 55-piece, Asian-influenced Kata collection has details, such as pieces lacquered in red or black inside or underneath, the way a kimono might have different colored fabrics revealed inside a sleeve.

Ever wondered who designed all those tidy red-brick Georgian buildings at Southern Methodist University? It was architect Mark Lemmon, who is responsible for 18 of them, including the chastely-designed Perkins Chapel. He’s also responsible for the Gothic-style Highland Park Presbyterian Church (pictured left). The Meadows Museum kicks off a series of exhibitions on architecture in Dallas with a retrospective of Lemmon’s work. Three small supplementary architecture exhibitions will be held at the same time, such as Five Houses by Hal Thomson, who was one of the city’s most important architects of historical houses from the late 1910s until WWII. The Drawings of Charles Dilbeck will display rare original drawings by Dilbeck, who designed fanciful, historical Norman Cottage and ranch houses in Dallas from the late 1920s. The shows run from February 23-May 1. Future exhibitions will feature works by Howard Meier, George Dahl, and O’Neil Ford. Meadows Museum, 5900 Bishop Blvd., 214.768-1199.
