Shopping Dallas 2004

Okay. We’ll admit it. We’re hooked. We are now officially shopaholics. And that’s saying a lot, because this isn’t our first time around a sales rack. For you see, we here at D Home pride ourselves on our knowledge of the retail arts. Looking for linens? Need more knickknacks? Craving a corner hutch? Not a problem. We have your back. But our latest endeavor—uncovering the best shopping districts in Dallas—pushed even us (and our credit cards) to the limit. From North Oak Cliff to Downtown Plano and all boffo boutiques in between, we scoured the area. We uncovered everything from the finest antiques to the best bargains and confirmed what we knew all along: Dallas has the best shopping. Period. No, this isn’t an exhaustive list. (Quit your griping, Lakewood. You’ll get your turn next year.) But it’s a fine fix for those who—like us—have that retail monkey on their backs. Yes, we’re the editors of D Home, and we’re shopaholics. There. We’ve said it. Now, let’s go find that darn corner hutch. >>

KNOX-HENDERSON

The Lowdown

Location: Sandwiched between Highland Park and Uptown.

Who’s There: Anyone jonesing for a sassy little sofa.

What to Wear: Comfortable shoes. This street was made for walkin’.

Talk about your urban renewal. Long before Starbucks and Pottery Barn took over this mile-long stretch of road, Knox-Henderson was a seedy little street with very little shopping. Ten years have passed, and now it’s all loveseats and lattes. Lauded as Dallas’ furnishings mecca, Knox Street is home to fabulous national chains (Restoration Hardware, Crate & Barrel) and small but equally stylish local shops (Forty Five Ten, Domestic Bliss). Across Central Expressway, Knox becomes Henderson Avenue, filled with quaint antiques stores and funky boutiques. It’s easy and fun to make a day and night of it on Knox-Henderson, charging and chomping your way down the strip. Morning coffee and pastries at Torrefazione Italia get the day started right. Drop next door to Sur La Table for the best cookware. Across the street, DL Lifestyle carries a slick line of contemporary furnishings. For traditional tastes, furniture store Weirs has been a Knox Street mainstay since 1948. Time to recharge the batteries? Indulge your sweet tooth at La Duni Latin cafe, home to the best tres leche cake in Dallas. A quick jaunt across Central finds you on Henderson Avenue where you can discover hidden treasures within The Whimsey Shoppe and Milton-Kent Antiques, or colorful folk art at La Mariposa. Then collapse under a heap of shopping bags at Cuba Libre, where the Caribbean lounge’s frozen mojito will help you forget how much money you just spent. Maybe Knox-Henderson is still a little dangerous—to your wallet.

SNIDER PLAZA

The Lowdown

Lisa Luby Ryan… At Home With A Past

Location: University Park, between Lovers Lane and University, off Hillcrest.

Who’s There: This is the town square for Park Cities moms, school kids, and SMU prepsters.

What to Wear:Anything Lacoste.

One of Dallas’ oldest shopping centers, Snider Plaza was an open field until 1927, when Mr. Snider from Wichita Falls purchased the 1,000-acre area at 80 cents an acre. (Yes, 1,000 multiplied by 80 cents is $800.) He put in the original fountain, as well as paving and street lights long before there was even a shred of commerce. Today, this five-block enclave still has a hodgepodge charm, with its collection of original boutiques, salons, and services. Home accessories abound: Rue No. 1 and Lisa Luby Ryan’s are among the best shops in the city. Parking is a pain, and after your second round of looking for a spot, you’ll be tempted to throw in the towel. Don’t.

The food at Snider Plaza is also fabulous: Peggy Sue BBQ (order the fried pie and buttermilk-battered onion rings) and Kuby’s Sausage House draw large, loyal crowds for their authentic cuisine. For burgers and salads, head to Cisco Grill, and for seafood, try Picardy’s Shrimp Shop or Half Shell’s Oyster Bar & Grill.

BISHOP ARTS DISTRICT

Bishop Arts District

The Lowdown

Location: North Oak Cliff, at Bishop Avenue and 7th Street.

Who’s There: Treasure hunters and shoppers in the know.

What to Wear: Less designer duds and more Austin-like relaxed.

The historic Bishop Arts District of Old Oak Cliff, c. 1920, is rapidly earning a reputation as one of the hippest shopping neighborhoods in Dallas-Fort Worth. Located just three miles south of downtown, this trendy area has recently added a new mix of home-furnishing shops, restaurants, and intimate hangouts. Winner of the 2001 Preservation Dallas best non-residential revitalization award, the district sports new sidewalks, resurfaced streets, vintage street lamps, and a tree-lined thoroughfare along Bishop Avenue and 7th Street. The shops each have their own personality, from the Bayou-found treasures of Patina Bleu to the fine antiques of B. Gover, Limited to whimsical gifts at Bishop Street Market. For a respite, there’s a wonderful meal to be had at Hattie’s American Bistro (ex-Parigi chef, Lisa Kelley, runs this kitchen) or the new Mayan restaurant, Veracruz Café (a favorite of the local shop owners). For those seeking a more traditional, home-cooked meal, try Tillman’s Corner. To wet one’s whistle, don’t miss Ifs Ands & Butts, a truly unique micro soda bar and cigar shop. And, for that mid-afternoon buzz, step into Nodding Dog Coffee Company for a fresh cup of La Créme.

GALLERIA NORTH (Alpha Road)

Roche-Bobois

The Lowdown
Location: North of LBJ,on either side of the Tollway.

Who’s There: Shoppers on a mission.

What to Wear: Driving gloves. You couldn’t walk this if you tried.

If there is a “furniture district” in Dallas, this is it. Though they’re driving distance apart, more than 35 furniture and accessories stores are clustered along Alpha Road and the surrounding streets, within five miles of the Galleria. Showrooms in this area are vast in size, offering thousands of square feet of home furnishings—the good, the bad, and the ugly. Shops run the decorative gamut from Cantoni’s contemporary furnishings to Bombay’s traditional tastes. There’s also a plethora of accessories shops such as Pier 1, Z Gallerie, and the always-festive Cookworks. West of the Tollway, there are showrooms with a to-the-trade-only ambience (but public access), complete with in-house designers and a few earnest workrooms. Dining is not a high point here, unless you’re willing to drive a little north or pop into the Galleria. With the exception of Jenn’s Place and Mondo’s, restaurants are scarce; pack an apple and a bottle of water.

UPTOWN & OAK LAWN

Legacy Trading

The Lowdown
Location: McKinney Avenue (from The Crescent to The West Village), Cedar Springs Road, and Oak Lawn Avenue.

Who’s There: Fashion-happy singles and urbanistas.

What to Wear: Only designer labels, darling.

Just north of downtown Dallas, you’ll find a wildly eclectic mix of retail ranging from fine antiques to tanning salons. Development here picked up the pace in the late ’90s, and now two key districts—Uptown and Oak Lawn—have emerged as the hottest destination shopping in Dallas. Uptown, which includes the jazzy West Village, actually has cobbled streets in places (a reconditioned trolley runs north and south on McKinney Avenue throughout the day). Side streets such as Fairmont and Routh have some of the best galleries in town, and there are retail gems on every block. Plan on spending at least two hours in West Village, which not only has strong home and design stores but also great people-watching—and dining, of course—at Ferre, Taco Diner, Paris Vendome, and Tom-Tom Noodle.

Meanwhile, the Oak Lawn/Cedar Springs area, populated mostly by gay and straight professionals, has had some of the city’s most original (read: offbeat) stores over the years, but today it’s all grown up. Yves Delorme and Peacock Alley recently set up shop there, alongside such national chains as Bombay Company. But not to worry: you can still get a funky hand-painted rice bowl from Nuvo.

HIGHLAND PARK VILLAGE

Gerald Tomlin Antiques

The Lowdown

Location: Preston Road and Mockingbird Lane.

Who’s There: Swank locals, celebrities in town, HPISD school kids.

What to Wear: If you have to ask…

Developed in 1930, Highland Park Village was the second shopping center in the country and the prototype for others across the country. Fooshee & Cheek designed the Spanish Mediterranean architecture, which is punctuated with arched doors and windows, overhanging balconies, fountains, colorful tiles, and tree-lined avenues. The mood is posh but relaxed. Great stops: Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein for their home collections, Avant Garden for chic floral design, St. Michaels Women’s Exchange for home accessories, Madison for tabletop and linens, and Hermés, well, just because. Dining opportunities are limited but perfect: Cafe Pacific for 5-star seafood, Mi Cocina, Patrizio’s, and Kobe beef burgers at Who’s Who Burgers.

LOVERS LANE

The Curtain Exchange

The Lowdown
Location: North of Mockingbird Lane, south of Northwest Highway, stretched between Preston Road a bit west of Inwood Road.

Who’s There: A bevy of Bluffview beauties.

What to Wear: A smart clutch with plenty of room for your credit cards.

Originally a winding road full of Bois D’Arc hedges, Lovers Lane emerged as a shopping district in 1949, when the Caruth family developed Inwood Village at the southwest corner of Lovers Lane and Inwood Road. This shopping area has had several face lifts over the years, but is still quaintly anchored by the original Inwood Theater, an art-film house famous for its smoky lounge and subtitles. In recent years, a bevy of remarkable independent shops have popped up on Lovers Lane, elevating it to destination status. Best restaurants are Iris or Cafe Italia for a sophisticated meal, Lover’s Pizza for a New York-style slice, Bread Winners for a sandwich or salad, City Cafe To Go or Kathleen’s Art Cafe Market for a bite on-the-run, Hofstetter’s for German fare, and Maudee’s for a cup of tea and light meal (and Highland Park ladies who lunch).

PLANO

Downtown Plano

The Lowdown

Location: North of Dallas, silly.

Who’s There: Volvo-driving yuppies with plastic to burn.

What to Wear: Beige. Lots of it.

The booming metropolis of Plano is chockful of shopping goodness, with an identical concrete strip center on almost every corner. But the best shopping in Plano is carved into three neat districts, each of which has its own personality. Historic Downtown Plano: Every major metropolitan area needs its own town square, and, just 25 minutes from Dallas, this is it. Twenty-five years ago Plano was mostly open fields and flat prairie land, and the majority of the street life centered around what is now the historic downtown on 15th Street. This quaint, brick-paved enclave sprinkles new restaurants, coffee shops, and condominiums amidst some highly varied retail. Tearooms adjoin antique shops. Hard-to-find gifts, crafts, pottery, furniture, and accessories fill a host of charming stores manned by shop owners who like to chat. Poppy’s Italian Restaurant and Jorg’s Cafe Vienna serve a pleasing European-style lunch. For something more homespun, try Into My Garden tearoom. The Shops at Legacy: Everyone who lives south of LBJ and has only seen Plano through the car window on the way to Oklahoma, raise your hand. It’s time for a field trip, people. If for no other reason than intellectual curiosity, you should check out Legacy. “New Urbanism” developers Duany-Plater-Zyberk & Co. (planners of Seaside, Florida) and Karahan Co. engineered this first live-work-play environment in the center of an existing business park. Buildings have been constructed in varying heights, streets are both narrow and wide, trees line brick sidewalks, and cafes commingle with high-end retail to create the appearance of a small town that has evolved over many years. Great people-watching. Great home and design shops. Dining is superb here: for a manly serving of beef, try Bob’s Steak & Chop House; for light seafood fare, go to Half Shell’s Oyster Bar Grill; and for superior Thai cuisine, don’t miss Samui Thai. Lakeside Market: Today the idea of open-air retail dominates, and this Austin-stone shopping center with colorful awnings and a perfectly manicured lake is now home to some of the best national and local home décor and tabletop retailers. Once a cattle trail connecting Dallas and Kansas City, the property has been held by the same family for five generations. You can actually eat on the lake at Mi Cocina and Mignon, a French bistro. Or just opt for a quick burger and shake at Purple Cow.

THE PRESTONS

Sanctuary

The Lowdown
Location: Preston Road and Northwest Highway.

Who’s There: Soccer moms and more soccer moms.

What to Wear: Espadrilles for happy walking.

There are two sides to Preston Center; the east is newer and, frankly, tonier, and includes nationally owned boutiques (Waterworks and Anichini) and local gems such as Sanctuary, Zen, Translations, and Rebecca Collins. Bachendorf’s, a long-time Dallas family jeweler, has a vast collection of china and silver. This area, albeit small, radiates charm and neighborhood appeal. For a quick lunch, try Corner Bakery; for something more leisurely, drop in at Houston’s.

Preston west will never be a place of beauty; in the center is an oafish parking garage that perverts the very idea of “town square.” But no matter. There are a handful of must-see home and design stores here—and a burgeoning restaurant scene. The reworked Foley’s building (before that, Sanger Harris), now filled with discount stores and salon services, is starting to give an upbeat, urban feel to the center. Best bets for lunch: the brand-new Flying Fish and Pei Wei, a more casual version of P. F. Chang. And there’s Cafe Express for an afternoon coffee and dessert.

FRISCO

Bridges Of Frisco

The Lowdown

Location: Between Preston Road and Dallas North Tollway.

Who’s There: Minivan-loving families of four.

What to Wear: What you just bought at Foley’s Red Apple sale.

The Bridges of Frisco, a brand-new, strolling shopping center, is smack in the middle of a retail area of more than 4 million square feet. Strategically located off the Dallas North Tollway and Highway 121, Bridges is bordered by Gaylord and Warren parkways and is distinguished by several large, stone arches at either entrance. Everything about this newly developed sector is exploding, from its population to its commercial development. Retail stretches in every direction—as far as the eye can see—guaranteeing even the most die-hard shopper a satisfying experience. And, as if all the existing stores were not enough, ever-enterprising Ikea is expected to move in next year with a 310,000-square-foot store full of furniture and lifestyle accessories.

Restaurants practically outnumber the stores, and you can choose from established standbys Applebee’s, Macaroni Grill, Texas Land & Cattle, and Corner Bakery, or elect to try more eclectic establishments such as 9 Fish, Crescent City, or Down Under Pub & Grub. For a burst of energy, stop by Maggie Moo’s ice cream shop or Starbucks.
