Expert Advice

Before you opt for plastic surgery, consider these words of wisdom from three of Dallas’ top plastic surgeons. by Katie McNew

Find out where the surgery is going to be performed.
If it’s not in a hospital, be wary. “Hospitals and [accredited] surgery centers have very strict rules to ensure that only the appropriately trained surgeons perform the appropriate surgeries,” says Benjamin Bassichis, M.D., F.A.C.S., of Advanced Facial Plastic Surgery Center.

Be certain that your doctor is a board-certified member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
“Go to the Texas Medical Board web site (tmb.state.tx.us), and find out if there are any problems with your doctor,” says David E. Martin, M.D. The site lists any license restrictions or other disciplinary actions taken by the medical board. For more online research, try the American Board of Medical Specialties (abms.com) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (surgery.org).

Ask who will be doing the anesthesia.
With such similar titles, choosing between an anesthetist and an anesthesiologist may seem trivial, but it is the difference between having a nurse or a doctor put you under, says Steven J. White, M.D., of USA Plastic Surgery. When dealing with your health, in whose hands would you rather be?

Discuss your goals and expectations.
Ask your doctor for a computer simulation of your potential results. “That way,” Dr. Bassichis says, “you and the surgeon can engage in an open and realistic discussion of what can effectively be achieved with surgery.”

Carefully review before-and-afters.
Because the magic of Photoshop can cast doubt on almost any image, study the pictures. Says Dr. White, “Ask yourself, ‘Are they consistent? Do they show multiple views of each patient before and after? Are the pictures taken from the same perspective in the same condition [i.e., with the same lighting]?’” This is also a good opportunity to assess whether or not you like the style of the surgeon’s work, adds Dr. Bassichis.

Go with your gut.
“You have to listen to your inner voice,” Dr. Martin says. If for any reason you are feeling uncomfortable with the surgeon, get out of there.
