The MLS side sits atop the league standings with 40 points as of today. Plus their home, Toyota Stadium, was named best sports venue in North Texas in the August “Best of Big D” issue of D Magazine (not yet online, hitting newsstands now.) They’ve even got me considering a trip to darkest Frisco to view a match. Their next at home is July 31 against Vancouver. +34

A Denton girl had set up a lemonade stand to raise money to support the Dallas Police Department following the awful events of July 7. But some ne’er-do-well stole her table and ruined her signs. That’s when detectives from the Denton Police Department chipped in to buy her a new table and supplies for her efforts. +1,200

Northeast Dallas
Lake Highlands movie-goers were ecstatic this week to learn that Alamo Drafthouse will be building one of its unique brand of dine-in theaters in a vacated Tom Thumb space near the intersection of Skillman Street and Abrams Road. Look for it to open in spring 2017. This cuts my own home-to-nearest-Alamo distance in half, so I’m on board. +35-mm

These five members of the city of Dallas Park and Recreation Board were frustrated during a board work session on Thursday when it became apparent that board president Max Wells had no interest in actually discussing the pros and cons of retired Hunt Oil executive Walt Humann’s proposal for a nonprofit to take over management of Fair Park. So they got up and walked out, rather than go along with what looks like an attempt to ram through approval of the agreement even before troublesome details have been ironed out. +1,000

The Dallas advertising agency lost its Chick-fil-A account — for which it had created the phenomenally popular “Eat Mor Chikin” campaign — after a 22-year relationship. The restaurant chain intends to further pursue a “Cows-plus” marketing strategy. Is that code for saying they’re going to hire the “Yo Quiero Taco Bell” dog? -30

The big Dallas-based bank announced it would be laying off 9 percent of its workforce and closing 8 percent of its locations. -160 million
Kessler Park
Dallas’ loose dog problem got even more complicated this week, if reports of a “Super Coyote” allegedly on the prowl in North Oak Cliff are to be believed. -7
Southwest Airlines
A nationwide technical outage on Wednesday forced the carrier to ground flights for several hours and created long lines as passengers weren’t able to check-in or print boarding passes. While the systems were restored and stabilized by that evening, the disruptions created by the outages left aircraft and crews in the wrong places, leading to hundreds of flights canceled Wednesday, Thursday, and today. -700
